How do you decide when to sail to South Africa, when the weather is changing continuously, and the wrong decision can have serious consequences? My guest is Tim Lemeer, my Dutch weather router, who helped me plan my passage for three years now. Today we talk about how to navigate to South Africa. In this conversation, we go behind the scenes of ocean passage planning. We talk about weather systems, routing strategies, risk management and the relationship between a sailor at sea and the person helping from shore. Because good weather routing is about much more than following a line on a screen. It's about understanding the bigger picture, recognising your options and knowing when the best decision is to change course — or wait. What does life look like when you're not sailing, but still living aboard a small boat on the other side of the world? Join me for a day exploring Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, where my sailing life meets everyday life on land. I'll show you the hotel next to my boat, where I often settle into the lounge to work online. It's become one of my favourite places to get things done while living aboard S/Y Loveworkx. Then we head into the city in search of my favourite bakery. Along the way, Port Louis surprises me with its vibrant street life. On a town square, I come across street dance, people practising tai chi, and a wonderful mix of people sharing the same space. And to finish the day? A hotpot dinner. This is the side of my solo sailing journey that you don't always see: exploring new places, finding little routines, working remotely, enjoying local food, and discovering that even when you're far from home, a place can start to feel familiar. Because sailing around the world isn't just about the miles you cover. It's also about the places you discover and the everyday moments in between. Welcome to Port Louis, Mauritius! 🌍⛵ 💙 Love my videos? Sometimes, two sailing journeys become connected long before the sailors ever meet. During my preparations for my own solo circumnavigation, I followed Martin's adventures aboard Jambo. When his mast broke, I was struck by the challenges he faced. I departed from the Netherlands in July 2023, and when I arrived in Cape Verde, I received the devastating news that Jambo had sunk on her way to South Africa. Martin had been rescued from his liferaft. But his sailing story didn't end there. He bought an Amel Mango, named Comeback, and began a new chapter. Now, our paths have finally crossed in Réunion, where we sat down for a deeply personal conversation about what happens when life at sea takes an unexpected turn. We talk about shipwrecks, setbacks and the courage it takes to start again. How do you deal with losing something you've invested so much of yourself in? Where do you find the strength to continue when your plans fall apart? We also explore another side of sailing around the world: relationships across the oceans. Martin's wife and my husband don't sail with us, but they visit us along the way. How do we navigate love, independence and connection when our lives unfold across different parts of the world? This is a conversation about much more than sailing. It's about resilience, starting over, the people who stand beside us, and finding the courage to keep following our own course — even when the sea has other plans. Because sometimes, a comeback is not about returning to the life you had before. It's about discovering what comes next. 🎙️ Welcome to Sailing Loveworkx – The Podcast: Navigating love, life and long passages. 🎙️ Enjoying Sailing Loveworkx – The Podcast? At 89 years old, he is preparing to circumnavigate the world for the third time. Captain Krzysztof Baranowski is a Polish sailor, author and visionary who has built two tall ships. But his mission goes far beyond teaching young people how to sail. His aim is to prepare them for life itself. So what drives a man, at 89, to keep setting out alone across the oceans? How does he stay fit, both physically and mentally? And what happens to us when we spend weeks alone at sea, surrounded by nothing but water, wind and the horizon? In this conversation, we explore the deeper meaning of a life at sea: solitude, resilience, vitality, freedom and the courage to keep following what calls us. Because perhaps the greatest journey is not the one that takes us around the world, but the one that takes place within us. Welcome aboard, Captain Baranowski. In this episode, I take you through my passage planning for the journey I’m about to make. I show you the route I have chosen from Mauritius towards RichardsBay, South Africa, and explain the decisions behind it — looking at the different weather systems, wind, currents, timing and the conditions I can expect along the way. This is an in-depth look at how I plan a long ocean passage as a solo sailor aboard my 27-foot Grinde. South Africa is one of the most challenging parts of my journey around the world, so choosing the right route and the right weather window is crucial. The passage is still ahead of me. This is the planning that happens before I leave. 💙 Love my videos? After an eleven-week stay in Mauritius, it is time to move on. I am now sailing to Réunion—a journey of 147 nautical miles. I had a wonderful time here and met some great people. I took a four-day breathing workshop with ‘The Art of Living’ and participated in a ten-day Vipassana silent retreat. It took me two full days to arrange and prepare for my departure. The departure was lovely; many people came to say goodbye. I set off at the end of the day, so it was already getting dark when I hoisted the sails. Unfortunately, the sail feeder came loose again. I had to fix it while the boat was bobbing up and down in the choppy waves. The first leg was difficult because the waves kept knocking the boat off course. It felt like being inside a washing machine. There was a lot of shipping traffic at night—freighters either heading for the anchorage or drifting all night while waiting for the pilot boat. I have good wind, am making good speed, and the weather is beautiful. My windvane steering system is acting up, too, so I still need to get that repaired. In the end, I heave-to twice because I am reaching Réunion very quickly. 💙 Love my videos? When you sail solo around the world, you can't afford to ignore your rig. Before continuing my journey, I ask certified rigger Julien Cervello to inspect the rigging of Loveworkx in Mauritius. Both running and standing rigging, fittings, turnbuckles, connections and all the details that keep the mast safely in the air need to be checked regularly — especially after thousands of nautical miles and several ocean crossings. You don't want to discover a problem with your rig when you're 1,000 miles from land. In this episode, Julien gives Loveworkx a thorough rigging check and we look at what I need to pay attention to as a solo sailor preparing for the next part of my journey. 💙 Love my videos? I hear voices next to my boat. Tim and Penny McArthur have just arrived in Mauritius — and the first thing Tim spots is Loveworkx. Tim has been following my sailing journey for a long time and is a big fan of Sailing Loveworkx. Now he is standing right next to my boat, with a lot of questions he has been wanting to ask. So we start talking about solo sailing, my 27-foot boat, ocean crossings, life at sea and the reality behind the dream. It's always special when someone you've only known as a follower suddenly becomes a real person standing next to your boat. 💙 Love my videos? Mauritius isn't just where my Indian Ocean crossing ended — it's a place I want to explore. In this episode I visit Le Morne Brabant and the Seven Coloured Earth in Chamarel, go kayaking around Île d’Ambre and explore Caudan Waterfront. There are performances everywhere: breakdancers, Tai Chi and Taekwondo. And then I try something completely new — Chinese hotpot. A day away from the boat, discovering a different side of Mauritius. 💙 Love my videos? I thought my liferaft was my last line of defence. Then I had it inspected at a certified Lalizas service station in Mauritius — and I got the shock of my life. The liferaft had become completely unusable. Luckily, I had arranged the inspection in time. Because the liferaft was still under warranty, Lalizas sent a replacement liferaft from Europe. But getting a liferaft to Mauritius isn't as simple as putting it on a plane. Due to the compressed gas cylinder and pyrotechnics, transporting it by air is not possible. Fortunately, Bosss Marine in Mauritius was able to help. They replaced the cylinder and flares locally, making it possible to get my safety equipment back in order. This experience was a serious reminder: don't assume your liferaft is ready just because it is sitting on your boat. Have it professionally inspected before you actually need it. 💙 Love my videos? A giant squall. Two rainbows. Breaking waves. 34 knots of wind. And one wave coming straight through the hatch while I’m sleeping. As the weather deteriorates, I’m changing headsails, switching to the storm jib and reefing the mainsail while Loveworkx is being thrown sideways by the waves. There isn't much sun, so I have to run the engine to keep the batteries charged. Then the front arrives and the wind increases to 34 knots. Through the night, Loveworkx keeps speeding towards Mauritius, with waves breaking against the side of the boat. And once again, I’m amazed by how well the Windpilot keeps steering the boat through it all. Read the full story: https://sailing.loveworkx.com/sailing-the-indian-ocean/ 💙 Love my videos? As Loveworkx accelerates across the Indian Ocean, I’m sailing at 7, 8 and sometimes 9 knots through the night. But the fast sailing comes with challenges. Sails need changing, hanks get stuck at exactly the wrong moment, and I have to prepare for the stronger winds that are coming. This is what solo ocean sailing really looks like: speed, sail changes, problem-solving and constant preparation. Alongside logging all those ocean miles, I’ve recently embarked on a new adventure on the water: Loveworkx The Podcast! Navigating love, life and long passages. As a solo sailor on my 27-foot Grinde, I keep crossing paths with the most extraordinary people. Their stories of courage, choices, and the raw reality of life at sea and how that transforms you are simply too valuable not to share.  To capture that inspiration and unpack how we navigate love and life on long passages, I decided to step behind the microphone and record podcasts. In the first few episodes, I’m taking you along in conversations with incredible guests I've met along the way. This is a short from my conversation with Maz: who I met on Cocos keeling Islands, she embarked on a Tallship with no sailing experience at all. Finds herself in 47 knots of wind for two days and reflects on my solo sailing journey from that perspective. And so many more nice interviews to come. I will start editing and publishing the Podcast soon.  💙 Love my videos? I've loved this song for years. Every time I play it, it reminds me to pause, look up, and ask what really matters. Choosing a life at sea isn't a path everyone understands. People often have an opinion. Some believe you shouldn't leave your family behind. Others assume life on the ocean can't possibly be as beautiful as it looks. The truth is that living aboard isn't an escape—it's a choice. A choice to live simply, to be close to nature, and to experience freedom in its purest form. There are challenging days, of course. But there are also endless horizons, magical sunrises, nights under a sky full of stars, dolphins alongside the boat, and a sense of peace that's hard to put into words. For me, this life is worth every mile. Played and sung on ukulele aboard SY Loveworkx. ⛵🎶

Alongside logging all those ocean miles, I’ve recently embarked on a new adventure on the water: LoveWorkx The Podcast — Navigating Love, Life & Long Passages. As a solo sailor on my 27-foot Grinde, I keep crossing paths with extraordinary people. Their stories of courage, choices, adventure, and the raw reality of life at sea — and how those experiences transform us — are simply too valuable not to share. So I decided to step behind the microphone and explore how we navigate love, life and the long passages we all encounter. The first conversations are already recorded. 🎙️ Gavin Randall — who sailed from Mauritius to Richards Bay. We followed his journey closely, talking almost every day about weather, currents, strategy and the decisions involved in making a challenging passage. 🌦️ Tim Lemeer — my weather router. As more sailors prepare to cross the Indian Ocean, we talk about the do’s and don’ts of sailing this part of the world, what a weather router actually offers, and why good routing is about so much more than simply looking at the models on Windy or PredictWind. ⛵ Maz — whom I met on Cocos Keeling Islands. She stepped onto a tall ship with no sailing experience at all, only to find herself sailing in 47 knots of wind for two days. We talk about that experience and how she looks at my solo sailing journey from her very different perspective. And there are many more conversations to come. I’m now starting the editing, and LoveWorkx The Podcast will be published soon. LoveWorkx The Podcast Navigating Love, Life & Long Passages. I’m sailing from Cocos Keeling to Mauritius — but I’m going a bit more north. The other sailors are heading straight for Mauritius following the rumbline. I choose a different route, together with my Dutch weather router Tim. My local weather router doesn’t think it’s a good idea. In fact, he expects me to have a very tough passage. So who will get the worst of it? Will my northern route leave me with too much wind — or will the boats taking the direct route end up in even worse conditions? This is the beginning of a 2.550 nautical mile solo passage across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius, aboard my 27-foot Grinde, Loveworkx. I recorded a short, personal update from the cabin today. Right now I'm anchored in Caudan Marina, Mauritius, and every day I pull plastic out of the water around the boat. It's not the first time — sailing through the islands, I've seen pollution again and again, on shores that should be untouched. It raises a question I keep coming back to: is this a governmental issue, something for policy and infrastructure to fix — or is it also on us, individually, to do something about it? 💙 Love my videos?
