While Brioni is recovering, I'm left to do all these boat projects on my own and even though it would be infinitely easier to take our main sail down with an extra pair of hands, I'm going to figure out a way to make it work. I need to take the sail off the boat to repair some damage we sustained on our passage from Tonga to New Zealand, and there are plenty of sailmakers nearby who can help me out if Brioni can't sew it herself. But there will be challenges while we're tied up inside a marina so hopefully the wind will cooperate. I can also move on to the job that I was excited about when I first started the ceiling repair, and at last we'll have our saloon back when I replace all the ceiling tiles. We are marching on through this refit and ticking off as many jobs as possible so that we can get back out sailing again as soon as possible. Brioni is doing her best to recover as well, but it's a slow journey. Thanks for all your support and encouragement. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 How to take down a main sail (completely solo) 05:28 Assessing the damage to our main sail 07:16 Removing battens from our main sail 09:37 The job I'm actually excited about 13:43 Finishing catamaran insulation 15:56 Lifting a mainsail (solo) 19:35 It's actually working! 20:40 Health update 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 📖 Our Story 📖 We're Iain and Brioni [The Reds] a couple of redheaded Scots who sold everything we own and moved halfway round the world to buy a boat that we could call home. Thanks to everyone who has supported our refit so far! A few more projects to tackle: www.red-seas.com/refit if you want to see what we're planning and find out how you can help. We started this catamaran refit by tearing down the ceiling panels in our saloon to discover that the balsa core had completely rotted away, leaving a gap between the upper and lower fibreglass panels making up the deck. In last week's episode I cleared out all of the rotten wooden core and prepared the surface to rebuild. I got a little carried away and just had to cross my fingers that I could actually complete this repair rather than just making a mess and leaving it at that. This is usually Brioni's area of expertise but with her still in recovery at the moment, the whole project is left for me to have a go and try and figure out. Let's see if I can pull this one off! Enjoyed this video? Support our refit: www.red-seas.com/refit and help us tackle more projects like this one! We're starting a major catamaran refit and one of the first jobs is a big one - Iain pulls down our saloon ceiling to discover that a massive area of our coach roof has a rotten balsa core, and it needs a lot of fibreglass repair work to make it safe before we can even consider going back out to sea again. While Brioni is unwell, Iain has to tackle this project alone and it's pretty daunting. With repairs like this, you often have to make things worse before they get better...I just really hope that we can manage to complete the job and don't regret taking it on in the first place! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 This is what we're dealing with 00:31 Soft deck on our catamaran 04:55 Our boat is leaking 07:05 Can you keep a secret? 08:19 Cutting our deck open 10:19 It's completely rotten! 14:19 Fixing our rotten deck core 16:58 It's worse than we thought 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. Support our refit and help us fix this catamaran: www.red-seas.com/refit This is the first episode in our massive catamaran refit series. Iain gets straight down to business and jumps into the bilge to fix one of our biggest problems - our boat has been slowly sinking but with this new smart dry bilge system to regularly empty any water out of our boat from super low pick ups, we are already on our way to a much more sustainable solution. Brioni is taking some time out to recover so it's all left to Iain this week to run hoses all throughout the boat and find the best place to install the brain unit, but he somehow gets it done. We usually sail short handed but in light conditions like this it’s a great excuse to practice our solo sailing skills like flying the spinnaker without any help.

Our final morning at sea is an incredible sight, from a perfect sunrise to spotting dolphins and whales on our bows as we spot the coastline of New Zealand ahead of us. We survived the storms that had battered us for the last couple of days, and arrived into NZ waters under spinnaker with calm winds and no waves. Celebrate with us as we arrive and clear into New Zealand, completing our three year mission to sail across the entire Pacific Ocean. What a ride it's been! Thank you to everyone who has been along with us for the journey - we have got a lot of plans coming up that we're really excited about, and a whole ton of boat projects and refit ideas that we'll be sharing with you in our next series of videos. Support our boat refit: www.red-seas.com/refit We are sailing from Tonga to New Zealand during cyclone season and the weather is starting to get worse. We have been motor sailing for a week and when the winds finally arrive, we raise our sails but almost immediately discover a problem - a fault in our rig snaps, and we have to act fast to make a temporary fix before the swells pick up and the storm arrives. Support our refit and find out our boat plans: www.red-seas.com/refit TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas We are now on day 7 of our passage from Tonga to New Zealand and things are starting to heat up. We had incredibly calm conditions when we set off from Minerva Reef but finally the winds are starting to fill in. While the waves are still pretty small, we can make the most of the time and sew together our NZ courtesy flag but it's not long before the squalls start to roll in and we see our first equipment failure on the boat. Help us fix our boat in this season's major refit in New Zealand: www.red-seas.com/refit We set sail for New Zealand three years after leaving Panama and finally completing our Pacific crossing. We have waited in Minerva Reef for a few weeks, hoping for a good weather window to take us south through the notoriously rough conditions to reach New Zealand and we hope we’ve chosen a good time to leave. Strangely there are no winds and so we’re starting our journey by motoring more than usual but if we had to choose between too much wind and not enough, I guess we should be happy with the weather we’re seeing. 850 miles to go, only three of us onboard….let’s see what the ocean throws at us. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Sailing across the entire Pacific Ocean 01:13 Setting sail for New Zealand 04:56 Catching monster fish in the South Pacific 09:22 Man overboard safety system 12:51 Weather routing to sail to New Zealand 14:46 Day 2 - sailing with no wind 15:55 Sailing to the other side of the world! 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. Sign up for our FREE Daily Passage Blog for all the news as we sail to New Zealand: www.red-seas.com/news-letter-signup What do sailors eat for Christmas dinner when they live out on the ocean, far away from land, friends and family? This week we are going hunting for lobsters in Minerva Reef, as we pause on our offshore passage from Tonga to New Zealand. We have never hunted for lobster before but Minerva Reef is the place to do it, and the South atoll in particular is an incredible place with abundant life. We had heard that if you walk out to the breaking waves at low tide, you can jump in the holes in the reef and look underwater to try your luck and catching them with your bare hand. It wasn't as easy as we first thought but it's a skill we won't forget for a while! Enjoy this little glimpse at Christmas from the other side of the world. BUY SNORKELLING GEAR: www.redseasmarine.com Of all the places we've ever been stuck on our boat, this has to be our favourite! We are sailing from Tonga to New Zealand but we have stopped off temporarily to explore Minerva Reef, a submerged island with a protected lagoon inside where we can anchor Indioko and wait for the winds to blow in the right direction. With our very good friends on hand, who have spent more time in Minerva Reef than anyone else in the world, we are ready to explore all the secret and hidden spots in this corner of the Pacific Ocean. We are excited to scuba dive the pristine reefs and bask in all the many different shades of blue that this part of the sea reflects back at us. We have loved testing out our new Fourth Element gear while we snorkel shipwrecks and dive the blue hole. It has been a year long dream of ours to complete our Pacific Ocean crossing and sail to New Zealand and here we are, starting the final leg as we set sail from Tonga. But before we sail all the way to North Island, we have one more stop to make along the way - a sunken island in the middle of the ocean! We picked up our crew in Tonga so there will be three of us onboard for this passage - a journey that is renowned among sailors for being a tough route, with scary weather and difficult conditions to battle. But with an extra pair of hands we are up for the challenge so join us as we set sail and face up to whatever the ocean has in store for us. It has been an incredible journey across the Pacific Ocean so far and we can't wait to see what other surprises await us. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com Or see it in action here: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Sailing across the entire Pacific Ocean 01:35 Setting sail to New Zealand 05:56 Sailing with a new crewmember 08:40 Huge waves on our offshore passage 12:41 Racing our sailboat across the Pacific Ocean 13:41 Behind the scenes on our ocean crossing 15:29 Land ho! 17:05 Sailing to a sunken island 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. Our latest dates are available on www.patreon.com/redseas where you can sign up and support our continued journey - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It's time to take on our biggest sailing challenge yet as we prepare to sail from Tonga to New Zealand. We've always just sailed our catamaran with only the two of us onboard but this stretch of ocean has its own risks and so we are bringing on a third crew member to help us reach New Zealand safely. We have truly loved our time in Ha'apai, Tonga, and so we make one more stop as we head South to the capital where our new crewmember is flying into, and the whales make one more appearance as we sail between shallow reefs and tiny desert islands in a beautiful part of the world. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com See a full tour of the system: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Coming up 00:53 Sailing to pick up our new crew 06:40 Whales chasing our sailboat 09:21 Best surf spot in Tonga 12:32 Our last island stop in Tonga 16:59 Catching a huge fish on our handline 19:57 Is it better to sail downwind with a spinnaker or full sails? As we sail around the world on our boat, we recognise that there is a certain amount of risk that we need to accept alongside the rewards that this lifestyle offers us. And usually it pays off - we get to swim with whales, dive with sharks and live on uninhabited remote islands with long sandy beaches. But there is always a seed of doubt or concern in the back of our minds that we are only one bad decision away from total disaster. A sailor's worst nightmare is seeing the conditions change, outside of their control, and losing everything as a result. And in the remote islands of Tonga, help is usually extremely far away. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com Watch our full tour of the system here: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng?si=sxEocTp5wldGatZ1 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Risk vs reward when you're sailing 01:02 Sailing the outer reefs in Ha'apai, Tonga 03:50 Sailing the same route as Captain Bligh's mutiny 08:43 The real reason we sailed here - shipwreck! 10:38 Nimbus Orbit chair from Coast New Zealand 12:18 Diving a shipwreck 17:22 Looking for more clues 19:58 Sailing with wild humpback whales (super close up!) 22:48 Rescued from a sinking boat 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. This is the future of sailing navigation - let us introduce you to Zora 3.0 by iNav4U. In this extra video we're going to walk you through the main screens and functions of Zora so you can see how we use the system at anchor, underway and even when we're off the boat. This OS is a total game changer and we expect this will become the industry standard before too long. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions - we'd love to chat more with you about sailing and navigation, and we hope you enjoy the system tour of Zora 3.0. Watch our Zora video: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng Pre-order Zora now: www.red-seas.com/zora We sail through the dangerous middle, the ocean that runs between Tonga's islands, along a volcanic ridge from north to south. As we sail from Vava'u to Ha'apai, we cross uncharted shallows, coral reefs and even some humpback whales. It's a fast run in great conditions and our sailboat just won't slow down. When we reach our new destination just before sunset, we are amazed at the beauty of these islands. We have to complete some paperwork to officially register our boat in this part of the country and then we're rushing to make the most of the time that we have here and trying to see as many new islands as we can. Don't forget, we're going to the Metstrade Boat Show in Amsterdam next week so let us know if you're going to be there - we'd love to see you! We'll be at the iNav4U booth showing off Zora 3.0. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Sailing comes with risks 01:03 Sailing away from Vava'u 03:14 Sailing with dolphins 04:35 Sailing with humpback whales 08:56 Close call - a near collision 11:32 How we plan a route with Zora 14:05 Arriving in Ha'apai, Tonga 15:09 Metstrade Boat Show announcement 16:16 First steps on land in Ha'apai 18:19 Sailing in Tonga is different from anywhere else 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound.
