We've been working non stop in New Zealand for the last few months as we refit our catamaran and get Indioko ready to head back into the tropics and off grid again. And although things haven't quite gone to plan so far this year, we've done our best to push on through but we're about to face another huge challenge... Brioni is still recovering from a relapse of M.E/CFS and isn't well enough to take on this passage to Fiji....so I'm doing it alone. It will be my first ever solo sail and it's a big one - more than 1000 miles across some of the roughest seas many sailors will ever take on. The forecast is daunting but it's time to go. This was not the video we expected to make this week. After spending almost three months in the boatyard in New Zealand, we were finally excited to get back in the water and start exploring the Bay of Islands before our departure...but Indioko had other plans and we had to turn around and make an emergency run straight back to the boatyard instead. We were so disappointed to realise that we were taking on water...not from our thru hulls this time, but a leaking rudder seal. There was no other option - we had to haul out again and get these things replaced...but of course things didn't go to plan and we found ourselves getting stuck on the hard for longer than we hoped. What a challenge it was to make this episode, but we hope you enjoyed it! Remember if you'd like to come and sail with us in Greece this September, there is one cabin left - check out www.red-seas.con/greece for more information on the Odyssey Sailing Festival. Ever since we bought our boat, there has ben one major problem...and it nearly caused a disaster when we hit a storm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. We've been battling this design flaw for the last 6 years but today we are going to put things right and fix this, once and for all. We've just completed a huge refit in a boatyard in New Zealand but although we're back in the water now, the boat projects don't stop. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and support our haul out - we are working hard to get everything wrapped up so we can get back out on the move again, exploring new places and discovering islands we'd never heard of. We tried to fly our drone around a remote island in New Zealand to get some awesome aerial shots of our boat in the anchorage but a battery failure meant it crash landed in the sea, only a short distance from our sailboat. It's too cold to swim here at this time of year but we just got an ROV from Chasing so we attached the grabber arm and sent it down after the drone to try and find it on the sea bed, almost 100 feet below us. It's time to take our catamaran out for a seal trial after three months of hard work in the boatyard. We have just completed a massive refit, upgrading or repairing almost every system onboard but now that we're back in the water again, we need to test everything out and make sure it all works as it should. We are leaving Whangarei and sailing up to Poor Knights, a marine reserve with a difficult anchorage. We'll be testing our Gori propellers, our new fuel tanks, our thru hulls and cutlass bearings, as well as our anchor and chain when we get there. We also have a new toy to play with - the Gladius Mini S underwater drone from Chasing. You can read more about it here: https://www.chasing.com/en/mini-s-overview.html We're so excited to be back on the water and chasing down new adventures again. This is one of the toughest videos we've made in a long time - at the end of our 3-month catamaran refit, we were so ready to get back in the water but when we launched our boat last week, we discovered that one of the thru hulls we had replaced was leaking. It took a huge effort to lift the boat out of the water again and fix it, but we weren't prepared for what happened when we launched the second time. It's an emotionally charged week, with a lot going on, but we're so glad you're here to live it alongside us. We know that things don't always go to plan but we tried to share the experience with you, with all its ups and downs as we fight to get our boat back on the water so we can continue sailing and adventuring. This is the final day of our catamaran refit - we have been in the boatyard for almost three months, replacing and upgrading almost every system on our boat. We have upgraded our anchor and chain, our windlass, our propellers and our cutlass bearings, as well as our solar and lithium bank, and the incredible paint job that we revealed last week! But now we are preparing to get back in the water and there are a few last minute jobs we need to complete before we can splash our hulls. Then the real test comes as we see if our new thru hulls are fully sealed or if any of them will leak. Nervous! SUPPORT our REFIT: If you're enjoying these episodes, consider sending us a tip to help us keep going! Support us right here: www.red-seas.com/refit And a huge thank you to Alexseal Yacht Coatings for their support as we give our catamaran a makeover! www.alexseal.com This week we are bringing you behind the curtain into a huge project that we've been working on in the background throughout our entire catamaran refit. We are painting our boat! Indioko has worked for more than 20 years in the harsh conditions of the tropics and her gelcoat is almost worn away entirely so it's definitely time we took care of her and gave her a new lease of life. We are so grateful to Alexseal for supporting our adventure and we can't wait to get started on this huge job. Soon we won't recognise her! At the same time as repairing some damage on the hulls, we also have some touch ups to do to the diamond non skid pattern on our sugar scoops and we think we might have found a cost effective way to make our own mold that we can use to patch up the damaged spots. SUPPORT our boat refit: www.red-seas.com/refit and help us keep making these videos for you. This boat project is the main reason we hauled out and started this huge refit in the first place. Our sailboat is more than 20 years old and the thru hulls were all starting to corrode and look well past their best, and when something as crucial as the only thing stopping you from sinking is looking past its best...it's time to get to work! We are removing 17 bronze thru hulls from our boat and replacing them with newer, plastic ones from TruDesign. We'll add collars for extra strength where possible and we can't wait to have a more reliable solution in the boat. Things get tricky with a few of our thru hulls at the end but that just gives us an excuse to make another change on Indioko. SUPPORT OUT REFIT: help us finish our projects and continue making these videos for you at www.red-seas.com/refit We are upgrading our solar panels on our Leopard catamaran so that we are fully set up to live off grid in some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific. We live full time on our sailboat and we very rarely visit a marina or tie up to a dock so we need to have enough power to keep all our systems running and we think this project is exactly what we need! We have been living for the last 5 years with 1400W of flexible panels (8x175W) on our hardtop and a further 800W of rigid panels (4x200W) above our dinghy but now we're removing all of these and replacing them with something newer and more powerful. The flexible panels have lasted well but we have noticed that 3 panels have failed within in the last 6 months and we can only assume that the others don't have much life left in them either. We will be installing 2x625W panels on our hardtop which will give us almost as much power as we had there before, but in a much smaller space. And then we're going to add 4x695W panels above our dinghy, giving us a huge capacity.....and they're bifacial so we can add another 15% or so on top of that with the reflections from the water. We'll monitor our usage when we get back in the water and see how efficient the bifacial panels are, and how true these claims of reflective capacity are. But for now, we're excited to have that much more power to fill our new 1200Ah of (semi) solid state lithium batteries. SUPPORT our REFIT and help us continue to make these videos: www.red-seas.com/refit We are taking on a huge refit on our sailing catamaran, fixing a lot of things that have failed over the years and upgrading a lot of systems to better suit our off-grid lifestyle. With a 20 year old catamaran, we have lots of thru hulls that are starting to fail and we will be switching these out soon - but besides these holes in our boat, there are two more that make us worry even more. In this video, I remove and replace them with a far better solution, thanks to Henley's Engineering in Auckland. If you're enjoying our catamaran refit series, please support our projects or send us a tip to keep us going. We are so grateful you're here with us on the journey and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who keeps us going out here! Support our refit at www.red-seas.com/refit We are pulling out our 100Ah Battleborn lithium batteries and upgrading to 5 x 240Ah (semi) solid state lithium batteries from Renogy to give us a total of 1200Ah in our house bank on our boat. We live fully off-grid 100% of the time, relying on solar panels to draw in enough power to run all our systems onboard but we never have enough storage capacity to keep us going through the cloudy days...but all that is about to change. We are installing FIVE Renogy Pro S1 batteries and we'll take you through the whole process - why we chose these batteries, where we are installing them and how we are wiring them up to our catamaran's power set up. And all this, just in time for Earth Day! Huge thanks to @renogysolar for supporting our adventure. 🌍 Don’t Just Save Energy. Make It. SUPPORT OUR REFIT: www.red-seas.com/refit for more information on our upcoming projects and opportunities to help out We are currently refitting our Leopard catamaran that has carried us halfway around the world to New Zealand. We have been working on replacing our fixed 3-blade propellers with new Gori folding props, and while we were doing that job we decided to upgrade our cutlass bearings as well. We found a company in Auckland, Henley's, who make polymer cutlass bearings and they gave us a great tip on how to install them...using liquid nitrogen! We have never seen this done before but it sounded way too much fun to ignore so we gave it a go and managed not to cause too much damage. Join us as we figure out how to install our new cutlass bearings and Gori propellers (and watch until the end to see what we did with all the leftover liquid nitrogen!) Thanks for all your support in this refit. We honestly couldn't do it without you, so thanks for watching, subscribing and hyping this video - it all helps us continue to make content. Aftermath of cyclone Vaianu - thankfully the system has now passed us and all is well. We saw high winds yesterday and today with heavy rain all night. Plenty of leaks in the boat that will need to be repaired but thankfully nothing major. We’ve heard stories from all across the north island with lots of people facing similar conditions, some much worse, so we’re grateful the storm moved further east and stayed offshore more than expected. Hope you’re ok wherever you are and that damage is minimal as this system moves on. #cyclonevaianu #cyclonewatch #newzealand #newzealandsailing #sailingcatamaran

Seeing the difference between Auckland and Whangarei was interesting on the drive north today. Waves are starting to pick up, winds are definitely gathering strength and now the rain is starting as well. We’ll keep an eye on everything here but so far we’re all safe and the boat is holding on strong. A few leaks in our windows but that’s why we’re replacing them! #cyclonevaianu #cyclonewatch #newzealand #aucklandnewzealand #sailinglifestyle

We’re seeing the winds pick up and the rain is now starting as cyclone Vaianu arrives in New Zealand. Lots of our friends sat through this system earlier this week when it passed near Fiji and now it has made a beeline for us on the north island here. We don’t expect the winds to be as strong as they were, but it seems to be covering a much wider area and the whole of North island is on a storm watch, preparing for high winds and flooding. We’re seeing winds get up to 30 knots now and we still have another 5 hours or so until they will reach their strongest. But so far we’re all holding strong and only two things have been blown over!

It's time to switch out our propellers and this is an upgrade we have been longing to make for a few years now. We've been dragging our old fixed props behind our boat for more than 25,000 nautical miles and they cause some serious drag, slowing us down and making our passages way less efficient. We knew we wanted to move away from fixed props, but there are always drawbacks to the alternative offerings of folding or feathering propellers so when we found these GORI props, they ticked all the boxes for us. We will still retain maximum power when motoring in forward AND reverse, but we'll also have the benefits of maximum efficiency when we're sailing and the props fold away, with decreased drag and potential to catch on loose lines or items in the water. We'll test them for real when we get back in the water and start sailing again, but we're super excited to finally make this change. First off, we need to figure out how to remove our old props and while we're at it we're going to change our cutlass bearings too - and that's a whole story in itself. Check out our newest upgrade as part of this refit series. Massive thanks to GORI for supporting our adventure.
