We are sailing as skippers on the Odyssey Sailing Festival next week in BVI but before we go, we have to sail to Tahiti so that we are near an airport. When we woke up in the morning we couldn't leave our anchorage because a Polynesia family were fishing and their nets were caught around our anchor chain. Iain jumped in to get a closer look at the action and after helping them for four hours, he was given a generous reward. A Massive Storm Caught Us Off Guard ??? We set out to visit Makatea Island, but huge waves forced us to change course, sailing an extra day to the nearest safe anchorage. Just as we started to relax, a terrifying lightning storm rolled in, passing directly over us! The thunder was deafening, the sky turned white with flashes, and our biggest fear? We are sailing 1000 miles from one end of French Polynesia to the other, and we don't have long to do it. We have sailed for seven weeks to reach the most southerly islands in French Polynesia - the truly remote archipelago of the Gambiers. When we told other sailors that we were sailing to this part of the reef, they warned us to stay away. Many said it was too dangerous to visit, but we had to see for ourselves. We crossed the lagoon from the village to the outer reef and found the most beautiful water that we've ever seen - miles of turquoise water over a sandbar with no other boats around. Heaven!
