This is the final day of our catamaran refit - we have been in the boatyard for almost three months, replacing and upgrading almost every system on our boat. We have upgraded our anchor and chain, our windlass, our propellers and our cutlass bearings, as well as our solar and lithium bank, and the incredible paint job that we revealed last week! But now we are preparing to get back in the water and there are a few last minute jobs we need to complete before we can splash our hulls. Then the real test comes as we see if our new thru hulls are fully sealed or if any of them will leak. Nervous! ENJOYED this VIDEO? Send us a tip to help us keep going - www.red-seas.com/refit THANK YOU! We've painted our sailboat as one of the biggest projects within our massive boat refit this year! It's been a huge amount of work, from sanding and repairing damage on the hull to fairing, priming and painting the topsides...but now we can reveal our final colours - what do you think of the design?? We have loved partnering with Alexseal for this project, and their materials have given us a great finish and made the whole job much easier to take on. You can find out more at www.alexseal.com We are so thrilled with how this whole job ended up and we can't wait to see how Indioko looks when we get back in the water...it's almost as if we have a whole new boat! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 It's time to reveal our finished paint job 00:38 Applying Finish Primer 05:11 This is my secret job 08:56 Choosing a design for our paint job 15:05 What colour are we painting our boat? 21:43 Paint reveal (part 1) 24:37 Adding an extra little bit of flair (reveal part 2) 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 📖 Our Story 📖 We're Iain and Brioni [The Reds] a couple of redheaded Scots who sold everything we own and moved halfway round the world to buy a boat that we could call home. We are now in Week 8 of our refit in the boatyard and we're halfway through a complete paint job of our 47 foot hulls. Last week we shared this secret project that we've been working on in the background, and now we're getting really stuck into all the preparations that come before adding paint. We have to remove our bootstripe and the pinstripes before sanding the whole boat and repairing any damage with fairing compound and eventually we'll add some primer. Support us right here: www.red-seas.com/refit And a huge thank you to Alexseal Yacht Coatings for their support as we give our catamaran a makeover! www.alexseal.com This week we are bringing you behind the curtain into a huge project that we've been working on in the background throughout our entire catamaran refit. We are painting our boat! Indioko has worked for more than 20 years in the harsh conditions of the tropics and her gelcoat is almost worn away entirely so it's definitely time we took care of her and gave her a new lease of life. We are so grateful to Alexseal for supporting our adventure and we can't wait to get started on this huge job. Soon we won't recognise her! At the same time as repairing some damage on the hulls, we also have some touch ups to do to the diamond non skid pattern on our sugar scoops and we think we might have found a cost effective way to make our own mold that we can use to patch up the damaged spots. SUPPORT our boat refit: www.red-seas.com/refit and help us keep making these videos for you. This boat project is the main reason we hauled out and started this huge refit in the first place. Our sailboat is more than 20 years old and the thru hulls were all starting to corrode and look well past their best, and when something as crucial as the only thing stopping you from sinking is looking past its best...it's time to get to work! We are removing 17 bronze thru hulls from our boat and replacing them with newer, plastic ones from TruDesign. We'll add collars for extra strength where possible and we can't wait to have a more reliable solution in the boat. Things get tricky with a few of our thru hulls at the end but that just gives us an excuse to make another change on Indioko. SUPPORT OUT REFIT: help us finish our projects and continue making these videos for you at www.red-seas.com/refit We are upgrading our solar panels on our Leopard catamaran so that we are fully set up to live off grid in some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific. We live full time on our sailboat and we very rarely visit a marina or tie up to a dock so we need to have enough power to keep all our systems running and we think this project is exactly what we need! We have been living for the last 5 years with 1400W of flexible panels (8x175W) on our hardtop and a further 800W of rigid panels (4x200W) above our dinghy but now we're removing all of these and replacing them with something newer and more powerful. The flexible panels have lasted well but we have noticed that 3 panels have failed within in the last 6 months and we can only assume that the others don't have much life left in them either. We will be installing 2x625W panels on our hardtop which will give us almost as much power as we had there before, but in a much smaller space. And then we're going to add 4x695W panels above our dinghy, giving us a huge capacity.....and they're bifacial so we can add another 15% or so on top of that with the reflections from the water. We'll monitor our usage when we get back in the water and see how efficient the bifacial panels are, and how true these claims of reflective capacity are. But for now, we're excited to have that much more power to fill our new 1200Ah of (semi) solid state lithium batteries. We have been working on replacing our fixed 3-blade propellers with new Gori folding props, and while we were doing that job we decided to upgrade our cutlass bearings as well. We found a company in Auckland, Henley's, who make polymer cutlass bearings and they gave us a great tip on how to install them...using liquid nitrogen! We have never seen this done before but it sounded way too much fun to ignore so we gave it a go and managed not to cause too much damage. Aftermath of cyclone Vaianu - thankfully the system has now passed us and all is well. We saw high winds yesterday and today with heavy rain all night. Plenty of leaks in the boat that will need to be repaired but thankfully nothing major. We’ve heard stories from all across the north island with lots of people facing similar conditions, some much worse, so we’re grateful the storm moved further east and stayed offshore more than expected. Hope you’re ok wherever you are and that damage is minimal as this system moves on. #cyclonevaianu #cyclonewatch #newzealand #newzealandsailing #sailingcatamaran
Seeing the difference between Auckland and Whangarei was interesting on the drive north today. Waves are starting to pick up, winds are definitely gathering strength and now the rain is starting as well. We’ll keep an eye on everything here but so far we’re all safe and the boat is holding on strong. A few leaks in our windows but that’s why we’re replacing them! #cyclonevaianu #cyclonewatch #newzealand #aucklandnewzealand #sailinglifestyle
We’re seeing the winds pick up and the rain is now starting as cyclone Vaianu arrives in New Zealand. Lots of our friends sat through this system earlier this week when it passed near Fiji and now it has made a beeline for us on the north island here. We don’t expect the winds to be as strong as they were, but it seems to be covering a much wider area and the whole of North island is on a storm watch, preparing for high winds and flooding. We’re seeing winds get up to 30 knots now and we still have another 5 hours or so until they will reach their strongest. But so far we’re all holding strong and only two things have been blown over!
It's time to switch out our propellers and this is an upgrade we have been longing to make for a few years now. We've been dragging our old fixed props behind our boat for more than 25,000 nautical miles and they cause some serious drag, slowing us down and making our passages way less efficient. We knew we wanted to move away from fixed props, but there are always drawbacks to the alternative offerings of folding or feathering propellers so when we found these GORI props, they ticked all the boxes for us. We will still retain maximum power when motoring in forward AND reverse, but we'll also have the benefits of maximum efficiency when we're sailing and the props fold away, with decreased drag and potential to catch on loose lines or items in the water. We'll test them for real when we get back in the water and start sailing again, but we're super excited to finally make this change. First off, we need to figure out how to remove our old props and while we're at it we're going to change our cutlass bearings too - and that's a whole story in itself. Check out our newest upgrade as part of this refit series. Massive thanks to GORI for supporting our adventure. We are upgrading our whole anchor set up, starting with a stainless steel anchor from Ultra Marine and then adding 100m of stainless steel chain from Cromox. To lift all that, we'll need a reliable windlass so we have increased the size of our windlass motor, switched out the gypsey to match the chain and even added a chain counter (thanks AR Peachment) to keep track of our scope. We live full time on our catamaran, and it's crucial that we can rely on safe equipment - we need enough chain to manage in deep anchorages, and an anchor that will hold our boat in storms and wind shifts. We don't usually use an anchor swivel but with this upgrade, we're adding the flip swivel from Ultra so we'll be testing out their whole system. SAVE 30% on Renogy batteries - www.renogy.com We are installing these solid state batteries from Renogy and it's a technology we've been excited about for years. We live full time on our catamaran in the tropics and power is a constant concern. With this major upgrade from our 600Ah LiFePO4 to more than 2000Ah solid state lithium, we will save space, save weight and have more control over our battery bank with remote monitoring and safety limits. If you have any questions about our choice of battery, let us know in the comments. And we'll share the whole install process in a few weeks as part of our catamaran refit so make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 The new battery technology we've all been waiting for 00:58 How do batteries work? 03:10 How do lithium LiFePO4 batteries work? 07:18 Why doesn't LiFePO4 work for us? 07:37 Future of lithium battery technology - solid state 10:31 How do the Renogy Pro S1 batteries communicate? 13:03 Renogy sale until March 31st 14:34 Our catamaran refit 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. SUPPORT OUR REFIT: www.red-seas.com/refit It's time we hauled out catamaran out of the water to make a start on our huge boat refit. We haven't lifted Indioko out for more than four years so it's definitely overdue for some repairs and major upgrades. Our works list is terrifyingly long but we're optimistic we can smash our way through the to do list and get back to sailing and adventuring again before we know it. First up, we have the challenge of leaving the marina and the incredibly tight space between two piling moorings where we've been tied up for the last few months while Brioni has been recovering. Then we'll motor down the river to Harbourside Boat Works which will be our new home for a few months while we completely change every system onboard out catamaran. We have got some incredibly optimistic plans and you don't want to miss a single step. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far - it's a lot of work and we're doing our best not to be intimidated by it, but I guess only time will tell if we've taken on more than we can handle. While Brioni is recovering, I'm left to do all these boat projects on my own and even though it would be infinitely easier to take our main sail down with an extra pair of hands, I'm going to figure out a way to make it work. I need to take the sail off the boat to repair some damage we sustained on our passage from Tonga to New Zealand, and there are plenty of sailmakers nearby who can help me out if Brioni can't sew it herself. But there will be challenges while we're tied up inside a marina so hopefully the wind will cooperate. I can also move on to the job that I was excited about when I first started the ceiling repair, and at last we'll have our saloon back when I replace all the ceiling tiles. We are marching on through this refit and ticking off as many jobs as possible so that we can get back out sailing again as soon as possible. Brioni is doing her best to recover as well, but it's a slow journey. Thanks for all your support and encouragement. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 How to take down a main sail (completely solo) 05:28 Assessing the damage to our main sail 07:16 Removing battens from our main sail 09:37 The job I'm actually excited about 13:43 Finishing catamaran insulation 15:56 Lifting a mainsail (solo) 19:35 It's actually working! 20:40 Health update 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. Thanks to everyone who has supported our refit so far! A few more projects to tackle: www.red-seas.com/refit if you want to see what we're planning and find out how you can help. We started this catamaran refit by tearing down the ceiling panels in our saloon to discover that the balsa core had completely rotted away, leaving a gap between the upper and lower fibreglass panels making up the deck. In last week's episode I cleared out all of the rotten wooden core and prepared the surface to rebuild. I got a little carried away and just had to cross my fingers that I could actually complete this repair rather than just making a mess and leaving it at that. This is usually Brioni's area of expertise but with her still in recovery at the moment, the whole project is left for me to have a go and try and figure out. Let's see if I can pull this one off! Enjoyed this video? Support our refit: www.red-seas.com/refit and help us tackle more projects like this one! We're starting a major catamaran refit and one of the first jobs is a big one - Iain pulls down our saloon ceiling to discover that a massive area of our coach roof has a rotten balsa core, and it needs a lot of fibreglass repair work to make it safe before we can even consider going back out to sea again. While Brioni is unwell, Iain has to tackle this project alone and it's pretty daunting. With repairs like this, you often have to make things worse before they get better...I just really hope that we can manage to complete the job and don't regret taking it on in the first place! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 This is what we're dealing with 00:31 Soft deck on our catamaran 04:55 Our boat is leaking 07:05 Can you keep a secret? 08:19 Cutting our deck open 10:19 It's completely rotten! 14:19 Fixing our rotten deck core 16:58 It's worse than we thought 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound.
