After a whirlwind week in Cartagena, it's time to continue our journey west. Before leaving Colombia, we make the most of our time ashore celebrating our friends' wedding and exploring one of the Caribbean's most vibrant cities. From island beach clubs and sunset catamaran cruises to Cartagena's famous party buses, walking tours, and the wedding itself, it's a week we'll never forget. But we need to get a move on if we want to cross The Pacific Ocean this year! After lessons learned on our passage from the USA to Colombia, we take advantage of Colombia's incredibly cheap fuel prices and stock up on extra jerry cans before heading offshore once more. With Escapade ready to go, we set sail on an overnight passage bound for the legendary San Blas Islands. The conditions are better than expected, the miles disappear quickly, and before we know it, we're approaching the islands much sooner than planned. As darkness falls, we carefully navigate our way into one of the Caribbean's most remote cruising destinations and drop anchor among the palm-fringed islands of San Blas. ⛵ Join us as we continue our sailing adventure through the Caribbean aboard our 40ft sailboat, Escapade. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔥 If you're enjoying the videos, you can Hype this episode on YouTube to help support the channel and share our adventures with more people. 🎥 Watch from the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5zzbEr20cfs0K1W3FAV46DJ 🫶🏽 Patreon (early access / ad-free): https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade ☕ One-off support: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/leadingtheescapade
The final stretch to Colombia… and after everything this passage threw at us, the wind completely disappears. After battling storms, big seas, a shredded headsail, and days offshore, we spend the entire night drifting slowly toward Cartagena at just 2–3 knots. If we’d had enough fuel, we could have arrived the night before — but instead we’re left floating offshore, eager to finally complete the passage and make landfall. Luckily, our amazing friends come to the rescue, bringing fuel out to the entrance of the port so we can safely motor the final miles into the marina, step onto land for the first time in days, and finally celebrate making it to Colombia together. Day 13 & 14 of our offshore passage from the USA to Colombia… After days at sea, the weather forecast suddenly shifts for the worse. What was meant to be manageable conditions turns into a long-lasting storm stretching across the entire Caribbean Sea — leaving us with nowhere to run and no way around it. With 50 knot gusts, massive swell, waves breaking over the boat, and almost no chance to properly rest, the boys take turns steering through the chaos before collapsing into the cockpit completely soaked between watches. This is the raw reality of offshore sailing when the ocean decides otherwise. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⛵ Support / GoFundMe (HeadSail replacement): After our headsail failed during this passage, a lot of you asked how you could help. Day 12 of our sail from the USA to South America… and this is where the crossing starts to get rough. After finally reaching stronger winds out in the Caribbean Sea, the conditions quickly deteriorate and our headsail completely shreds offshore. With over 30 knots of wind, building swell, and no fuel left to rely on, we’re forced to drag the sail down on a violently rolling deck and attempt repairs in the middle of the ocean. Exhausted, sleep deprived, sea sick, and running purely on adrenaline, this turned into one of the hardest days we’ve faced aboard Escapade so far. Even Tom — who has never been sea sick before — finally reaches his limit while helping repair the sail down below. To make things worse, we get caught in a nasty squall with winds of 45 knots as the reality of offshore sailing really begins to hit. This episode is a raw look at what life can actually be like crossing an ocean on a 40ft sailboat when things stop going to plan. ⛵ Follow the journey as we sail from the USA to Colombia aboard our 40ft sailboat, Escapade — daily episodes documenting the reality of life offshore, ocean crossings, unexpected moments, and everything that comes with sailing across the Caribbean Sea. 🔥 If you’re enjoying the series, you can now Hype this video on YouTube to help push it to more people and support the channel. 🎥 Watch from the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5x0VEfLF0XzUTVuvq 🫶🏽 Support the channel & get early access/ad-free videos: https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade ☕ One-off support: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/leadingtheescapade 📍 Follow us in real time: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leadingtheescapade #offshoresailing #oceancrossing #boatlife
Day 11 of our sail from the USA to South America… and today feels like a real turning point. The last glimpse of land disappears behind us as we head further offshore with nothing but ocean ahead. After barely any wind and carefully watching our fuel levels, we finally start to feel the conditions changing as stronger breeze begins to fill in and we edge closer to the trade winds. Along the way we dodge huge cargo ships crossing our path, celebrate Tom’s 40th birthday at sea, and get an incredible visit from dolphins riding the bow of Escapade. This was one of those raw, slower days offshore that really shows what ocean sailing is actually like. ⛵ Follow the journey as we sail from the USA to Colombia aboard our 40ft sailboat, Escapade — 🔥 If you’re enjoying the series, you can now Hype this video on YouTube to help push it to more people and support the channel. 🎥 Watch from the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5x0VEfLF0XzUTVuvq 🫶🏽 Support the channel & get early access/ad-free videos: https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade ☕ One-off support: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/leadingtheescapade #sailingvlog #caribbeansailing #sailingadventures
Day 9-10 of our sail from the USA to Colombia… and this stretch tested us hard. We’re still battling 30 knot winds as we try to make our way past Cuba and toward the channel between Cuba and Haiti. But between the strong current pushing against us and the wind directly on the nose, every tack feels pointless. No matter what we do, we’re barely making any ground. Then things get worse. The weight of our outboard engine snaps the bolt holding part of the pushpit into the boat, leaving us trying to deal with damage offshore in rough conditions. After hours of fighting the current, we’re forced to make an unexpected decision… turn the engine on and motor our way past Cuba. But there’s another problem waiting ahead. As we approach Haiti, we know we’re about to hit a huge wind shadow — and suddenly we’re not sure if we even have enough fuel left to get through it. ⛵ Follow our sail from the USA to Colombia 🎥 Start the series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5x0VEfLF0XzUTVuvqNrpM3P ❤️ Support the journey & watch early/ad-free videos: Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade 🫶🏽 One-off support: PayPal → https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=R48D67JJBMDB4 Subscribe and follow along as we prepare Escapade for our Pacific crossing. We Fixed the Sail… But Now the Rigging Might Fail | Day 8 We fixed the sail and set off again… but now we’re worried the rigging might fail. After tearing our sail on our first attempt to leave the Bahamas, we finally get it repaired and feel ready to try again. We haul anchor, hoist the sails, and set off towards Colombia… hoping this time everything goes to plan. But almost immediately, something doesn’t feel right. Our new rigging is making us second guess everything. It seems looser than it should be, and out here in open ocean, that’s not exactly something you want to be unsure about. Add to that another questionable weather forecast, and we’re already pushing into 30 knots of wind… again. We’re hoping things settle down tomorrow. …but they don’t. This is just the beginning of what turns into a much tougher passage than we expected. After days of waiting in the Bahamas for the right weather window, it’s finally time. We’re prepped, fuelled, stocked up, and ready to go. We haul anchor, raise the sails, and set off—this is it. But almost immediately, things take a turn. Out of nowhere, a squall rolls through and hits us hard. Winds spike to 40 knots, catching us completely off guard… and within moments, disaster strikes. Our sail tears almost from top to bottom. Just like that, our crossing is over before it even begins. We’re forced to turn around and head back, dealing with the damage and figuring out how to repair a shredded sail well enough to try again. It’s frustrating, it’s exhausting, but this is all part of life offshore. Now it’s a race against time to fix everything and get back out there tomorrow. ⛵ Follow our sail from the USA to Colombia 🎥 Start the series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5x0VEfLF0XzUTVuvqNrpM3P ❤️ Support the journey & watch early/ad-free videos: Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade 🫶🏽 One-off support: PayPal → https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=R48D67JJBMDB4 Subscribe and follow along as we prepare Escapade for our Pacific crossing. Still tucked away in the Ragged Islands, we’re waiting on the right weather window to make our next big move south to Colombia… but life out here doesn’t exactly slow down. While we wait, it’s time to get a few jobs ticked off. We break out the sewing machine onboard and get to work repairing our canvas, replacing the clear panels in the biminey, and even sewing zips onto our flexible solar panels to make them easier to manage underway. Of course, it’s not all work… the boys head out and manage to catch a fresh grouper and lobster, which turns into the ultimate beach bonfire catch & cook on a remote island. Nights like this are hard to beat. But the waiting finally comes to an end. A weather window opens up—and just like that, it’s go time. We scramble to prep for the passage, cook up food, grab fuel, and get Escapade ready to head offshore once again. Before we leave, we squeeze in one last bit of fun… taking the underwater scooter out for a spin in these unreal Bahamian waters. We finally get a moment to breathe… After a wild crossing from Miami and getting hit with way more wind than expected, we wake up in the remote Ragged Islands in the Bahamas — and honestly, it feels like paradise. With the next weather window not quite ready for our push down to Colombia, we slow things right down and make the most of where we are. And this place? It’s easily one of our favourites in all of the Bahamas. Over the next couple of days, we settle into island life — ticking off some boat jobs, jumping in the water for spearfishing and diving, and heading ashore to one of the most unique spots out here, Hog Cay Yacht Club. It’s a mix of productivity and pure appreciation for this insanely beautiful, untouched part of the world… and a reminder of why we chose this life in the first place. ⛵ Follow our sail from the USA to Colombia 🎥 Start the series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5x0VEfLF0XzUTVuvqNrpM3P ❤️ Support the journey & watch early/ad-free videos: Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade 🫶🏽 One-off support: PayPal → https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=R48D67JJBMDB4 Subscribe and follow along as we prepare Escapade for our Pacific crossing. Day 2 & 3 of our sail from the United States to Colombia did not go to plan. What was meant to be a comfortable beam reach in 18–22 knots quickly turns into something very different. Instead of cruising south, we find ourselves stuck in gale-force winds, beating upwind for nearly two straight days with the boat heeled over and the crew running on almost no sleep. With Escapade pinned over at a 15° lean and waves on the nose, the miles come slowly and the reality of this offshore passage starts to set in. Fatigue kicks in, morale gets tested, and survival mode begins to take over. Somewhere in the middle of it all, the boys decide to try their luck at fishing again — and hook into a monster. Wahoo… or king mackerel? Either way, it’s a welcome boost during a tough stretch at sea. After pushing through the conditions, we finally make landfall in the Ragged Islands of the Bahamas, where we drop anchor, regroup, and wait for a better weather window before continuing the long passage south to Colombia. Offshore sailing doesn’t always go to plan… and this leg is only just getting started. ⛵ Thanks for following the journey aboard Escapade. After leaving the Gulf Stream behind, we finally arrive on the Bahama Bank — and the ocean greets us with something completely unexpected. Glass-off conditions. The water turns into a mirror as far as we can see, leaving us with no wind and a long day and night of motoring across the shallow turquoise banks. With the autopilot set and nowhere to be in a hurry, the boys try their luck at fishing while we settle into the rhythm of passage life. But the calm doesn’t last forever. Before long, the wind begins to fill in… and it’s not quite what the forecast had promised. What starts as an easy crossing of the banks slowly begins to change, and we start getting our first hint that this passage south might not be as straightforward as we hoped. And at this point… we still have a long way to go. This is Day 1 (our first full day) of our daily passage sailing from the United States to Colombia aboard our 40-foot sailboat, Escapade. We’re finally doing it! After months of preparation, upgrades, and hard decisions, we’re leaving the United States and sailing south to Colombia. North America to South America — just us, Escapade, and the open ocean. This marks Day 0 of a new daily vlog series where we’ll be sharing the entire passage as it unfolds — the good decisions, the hard lessons, the unexpected moments, and everything in between. We’ve officially entered full Pacific prep mode 🌊 In this episode, we spend the day hunting down everything we need to get Escapade ready for another ocean crossing and life in remote destinations far from civilisation. From safety gear and spare parts to haul out supplies, off-grid essentials, tools, maintenance gear and everyday living items… the boat is quickly turning into a floating warehouse again 😅 With another major passage on the horizon, we’re trying to think ahead and prepare for the reality of cruising in places where chandlery stores, Amazon deliveries and easy repairs simply don’t exist. Which means stocking up now… before we leave. We also start getting organised for our upcoming haul out, tackle jobs around the boat and share some of the gear and upgrades we think will make life safer and easier out at sea. ⚓️ Thanks for following along with our journey aboard Escapade. If we’re going to cross the Pacific… we need to be ready for weeks without seeing land 🌊 In this episode, we take provisioning seriously (maybe a little too seriously 😅). We start by building a master shopping list for everything we think we’ll need to survive the crossing—then head out to stock up. We spend thousands of dollars at Walmart loading up on dry goods, canned food, and anything that’ll last… before heading to Aldi for fresh produce, meat, and dairy. But the real work starts when we get back to the boat… We unbox everything, remove labels from cans (to avoid cockroaches 😬), deep clean the bilges, freeze flour to kill any bugs, vacuum seal individual portions of meat, and somehow find space to store it all onboard. It’s a full-on mission to turn Escapade into a floating pantry—because once we leave… there’s no quick trip to the shops. This is everything it takes to provision a sailboat for one of the biggest ocean crossings in the world. We just completed one of the biggest transformations we’ve ever taken on… a full synthetic teak deck refit. What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a full-on project—removing deck hardware, stripping everything back, prepping the surface, and completely rebuilding the deck. For this job, we teamed up with World Panel Products, who handled the installation and brought the whole vision to life. Being able to see the process up close and learn how it’s done was an incredible experience. In this episode, we take you through the entire transformation—from pulling everything apart to installing the new synthetic teak and bringing the deck back to life. We finally took on one of the biggest and most important upgrades you can do on a sailboat… replacing all of our standing rigging. With our rigging over 14 years old and a Pacific crossing ahead of us, this wasn’t something we were willing to risk pushing any further. Even with regular inspections, there’s no real way to see what’s going on inside the wire—so at a certain point, replacement becomes the safest option. In this episode, we measure, remove, and install brand new rigging—learning the entire process along the way. From identifying fittings and working up the mast, to installing Sta-Lok terminals and even replacing our furling system, this was a full-on project. We originally planned to take it on ourselves, and while we did a huge portion of the work, we also had guidance along the way—which gave us the confidence to get it done right. If you’ve ever wondered what it actually takes to replace your rigging, this is the full process from start to finish. This week on Escapade the clock starts working against us! We kick things off by upgrading our guest cabin with a brand new custom mattress from Ship Shape Bedding. After templating the space, it’s time for the big moment—unpacking and fitting it onboard… and safe to say, it completely transforms the cabin. 👉 Check them out here: https://shipshapebedding.co.uk/?srsltid=AfmBOorAbdqQ-aScfNNcxZhAfbsEZivOvaXu255G1fyjtuseqho53fAu With that done, it’s time to fire up the Sailrite for one of the first times. We take on some canvas repairs ourselves, learning as we go and slowly building confidence with the machine. But plans change quickly… With only a week left on our visa, we make a last-minute decision to sail from West Palm Beach down to Miami—and the arrival does NOT disappoint. Pulling in at night with the skyline lit up is something we won’t forget anytime soon. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a long list to get through before crossing the Pacific—new rigging, replacing our teak decks, tracking down important packages, and provisioning enough food to last us 4–6 months at sea. This week on Escapade, we install one of the biggest upgrades we’ve been looking forward to… a brand new watermaker. We already had a watermaker onboard, but it was old, clunky, and increasingly unreliable — not exactly what you want when you’re preparing to head out into the Pacific. If we’re going to be spending long periods off-grid, we need something we can truly rely on… and ideally, something that can keep up with demand too. Our new Seawater Pro system produces up to 40 gallons per hour, which completely changes the way we can live onboard. Less time worrying about water, more freedom to explore. In this episode, we take you through how we install it— mounting, plumbing, wiring, and getting everything dialed in — before putting it to the test for the first time.
