Just when we thought it couldn't get worse? The other water tank on our sailboat has now burst, flooding the boat and costing us even more precious drinking water. And the tank we spent days fixing? Still leaking. All the water we just carried barefoot from a creek-70L by kayak-is vanishing fast. Life off-grid at sea isn't always paradise.

With the tank repaired and the rain ceased we went in search of some fresh drinking water. Hiking up hills and rough terrain we find a suitable spring. With the help of some of the village kids, we do multiple trips to carry the water back to the kayak. Undoubtedly overloaded with 70L of water per trip and windy wavy seas, we just make it back to the boat before the kayak is completely under. After a rough 4 day crossing from Australia to Papua New Guinea we realise one of our water tanks has broken and spilt a third of our drinking water to the bilge. Through a week of heavy rain we rush to get the tank repaired in time to catch some of this precious resource. Exactly the conditions that they recommend not to fibre glass in. Episode 10: Sailing Louisiades, Papua New Guinea After a closer inspection, we discovered the reason we were so low on water: most of our fresh drinking supply had leaked into the bilge. Ryan rushed to repair the tank, knowing how scarce fresh water can be in these islands. We nearly sank the kayak trekking through mangroves, scrambling up steep inclines, and navigating winding tracks multiple times, hauling our new water supply back to the boat by hand. All of this, only to wake the next morning sore and exhausted - and find the hull full of the very water we'd spent the entire day collecting. 0:00 - Disaster Strikes: Our Portside Water Tank Burst 0:43 - Intro video 1:16 - Emergency Repair: Fixing the Burst Tank 2:21 - Uh-oh?Another Leak in the Boat?! 3:04 - DIY Fibreglass Boat Repair Hack 5:13 - Into the Bush: Mission to Find Fresh Water 9:31 - We Nearly Sunk the Kayak Carrying Our Water Supply 9:52 - Morning Shock: Starboard Hull Completely Flooded 11:13 - Total Water System Failure - Both Tanks Are Broken Places: Sudest Island, Louisiades Archipelago, Papua ew Guinea Buy us a coffee ? https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or Send us a gift ? https://throne.com/onceuponareef Follow us: ?INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy ?PATREON ? https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef Poppy's YouTube Channel ? https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy ? Our friend Solo takes us on a barefoot hike to one of his gardens. This is not like the gardens you're used to seeing. To make their garden, first they burn, then cut the trees by axe. the wood is then used as a retainer to support the steep slopes from erosion. Due to the constant manual labour required to maintain these wild gardens, garden houses are often constructed using the felled wood to create shelter for cooking, resting/sleeping and of course chewing Betel Nut ? Unlike modern farming methods, there is no use of fertiliser, pesticides, herbicides, irrigation or electricity. Instead, rain, sun, and the native soil are all the plant needs. It all becomes evident when you taste the difference in the produce. This is true organic farming not just a marketing gimmick like is often the case in Western societies.
