We practice technics taught to us in Papua New Guinea, how to cook our food on the fire. Referred to as "Picnic", or probably better known in othrr parts of the world as Barbeque. Creating a elevated rack above the fire allows you to control the cooking process. When patient, you can smoke dry the fish to preserve it for up to 3 days. After weather conditions worsen, we are forced to abandon our plans of another reef stop. The closest semi-safe anchorage looked like Kokoluba, so we continued for many more hours, making the decision to anchor at night with nothing but our GPS location overlayed on a satellite chart. Definitely not advisable or encouraged in anyway, but doable if the emergency arises with as simple of a device as Raspberry Pi. We paddle up the river, a crocodile gliding beneath us, before ditching the kayak to trek through dense rainforest and into the mountainsโwhere gold is said to lie. Sudest Island, part of Papua New Guineaโs Louisiade Archipelago, saw a gold rush in the early 20th century, with European prospectors and local miners searching for fortune. While large-scale mining never took off, small-scale panning and sluicing left their mark on the islandโs history. We escape our wet, mouldy boat and trek barefoot for hours through rough terrain to help plant yams in a local gardenโunlike anything seen in modern society. In the Louisiade Islands of Papua New Guinea, gardening is a mix of tradition and sustainability. Using slash-and-burn methods, hand tools, and rain-fed irrigation, locals grow yams, sweet potatoes, taro, and more. These gardens, often far from villages, are vital for survival and hold deep cultural significance. After a closer inspection, we discovered the reason we were so low on water: most of our fresh drinking supply had leaked into the bilge. Ryan rushed to repair the tank, knowing how scarce fresh water can be in these islands. We nearly sank the kayak trekking through mangroves, scrambling up steep inclines, and navigating winding tracks multiple times, hauling our new water supply back to the boat by hand. All of this, only to wake the next morning sore and exhausted โ and find the hull full of the very water weโd spent the entire day collecting. 00:00 - Disaster Strikes: Our Portside Water Tank Burst ๐ฅ๐ฐ 0:43 - Intro video ๐ฌ 1:16 - Emergency Repair: Fixing the Burst Tank ๐ง๐ ๏ธ 2:21 - Uh-ohโฆAnother Leak in the Boat?! ๐ฑ๐ค 3:04 - DIY Fibreglass Boat Repair Hack ๐ ๏ธ๐ถ 5:13 - Into the Bush: Mission to Find Fresh Water ๐ฟ๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ง 9:31 - We Nearly Sunk the Kayak Carrying Our Water Supply ๐จ๐ฃโโ๏ธ 9:52 - Morning Shock: Starboard Hull Completely Flooded ๐๐ณ 11:13 - Total Water System Failure โ Both Tanks Are Broken ๐งโ๐ฑ ๐ฅ Episode 10 โ Sailing the Louisiades, Papua New Guinea ๐Location: Sudest Island, Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea โ Support Our Journey โ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or ๐ Send us a gift โ https://throne.com/onceuponareef ๐ Follow us: ๐ธ INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy ๐ก PATREON โ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ๐ฅ Poppy's YouTube Channel โ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy ๐ง BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, weโre Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. With our water reserves running low, we pick our next anchorage purely off satellite imagery. We picked where looked like it would sill have fresh spring water to fill our tanks for us to drink and stay alive. This episode we take advantage of the weather and sail out to the Barrier, a remote and rarely visited reef system that surrounds the Louisiades and separates the lagoon from the open ocean. Day 2 and we have already made lots of new friends. It was only early when we were hurrying all the tools inside for our unexpected 15 guest arrival from the local village. All the tools were drenched in salt water from leaky windows during the crossing. It wasn't long before we were offered some of the local custom, betel nut. Referred to by the locals as "PNG PK", likening it to be as common as chewing gum in European societies. Almost everyone here on this island chews. Being a stimulant like a strong coffee, it is chewed before, during and after most activities or social events. They laughed with excitement as we spat bloody looking saliva into the water, and us returning a red stained teeth grin. Excited and maybe feeling the buzz, I leave poppy with two of the guys to go spear some fish for another bbq or what they refer to as picnic. Poppy unsure of what to do left with so many people by herself started a jam then lead to the favourite christian songs and an unforgettable day, feeling more about of the community and we hadn't even visited the village yet. 00:00 - We Found a Leak in our Boat ๐ค๐ฆ 0:56 - Intro video ๐ฌ 1:31 - How to Eat Betel Nut ๐ฟ๐ฝ๏ธ 2:41 - Trying Raw Betel Nut for the First Time ๐ฌ๐ฐ 3:43 - Betel Nut Turns Our Teeth Red ๐ฆท๐ด 5:20 - Starting to Feel the Effects of Betel Nut โก๐ต 7:00 - Musical Jams with the Locals ๐ถ๐ค 8:24 - Singing Local Music with the Villagers ๐ค๐ ๐ฅ Episode 3 โ Sailing the Louisiades, Papua New Guinea ๐Location: Sudest Island, Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea โ Support Our Journey โ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or ๐ Send us a gift โ https://throne.com/onceuponareef ๐ Follow us: ๐ธ INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy ๐ก PATREON โ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ๐ฅ Poppy's YouTube Channel โ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy ๐ง BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, weโre Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. We woke up in a foreign country, our first time sailing overseas, and the nerves are setting in. We're unsure where to anchor or what the proper arrival protocols are for entering a new land. With every passing wave, a sense of uncertainty grows, especially with the looming fear of potential pirates or threats. Weโre sailing into unknown waters, where safety isnโt guaranteed. Already, we can see traditional sailing canoes on the horizonโa sign that we're truly somewhere different, but also a reminder that we're far from familiar shores. After a rough 4 day crossing, we entered through a narrow reef channel and anchored up in the middle of the night, not what you want to do ! We entered with no lights on to not draw attention as we were not yet sure if there could be potential pirates or malicious threats in the area. There is nothing quite like entering a foreign country by boat where your safety is not guaranteed. The only lights visible were distant fires from locals cooking their dinner. With what felt like a blink, we awoke with the realisation that we were no longer in the safety of Australian waters. There is no shops, no reception, and no way to tap out and get back home. We had anchored in an area we had heard nothing about, only picked off a satellite map, so we were anxious to meet the locals and get a feel for where we had landed. 00:00 - First Day in Louisiades, Papua New Guinea ๐ต๐ฌ๐ด 0:24 - Traditional Sailing Canoes ๐ถโต 1:11 - Preparing a Gift for the Chief ๐๐ 2:38 - Exploring the Land ๐ฟ๐ถโโ๏ธ 4:42 - Intro Video ๐ฌ 5:29 - Diving with the Locals ๐คฟ๐ 6:30 - Learning How to Dehusk a Coconut Like a Local ๐ฅฅ๐จ 7:49 - Learning How the Locals Prepare a BBQ ๐๐ฅ 8:15 - Food Preservation Techniques ๐ฅซโ๏ธ 9:31 - Trying the Local Fish ๐๐ 9:56 - Learning a Local Game Called "Target Shooting" ๐ฏ๐ฎ 11:02 - Trying Their Staple Food ๐๐ด 11:25 - Reflecting on Our First Few Days ๐๐ค 12:56 - Where to Find Fresh Water? ๐ง๐ฐ 13:19 - Safety and Pirates ๐ดโโ ๏ธโ ๏ธ ๐ฅ Episode 2 โ Sailing the Louisiades, Papua New Guinea ๐Location: Sudest Island, Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea โ Support Our Journey โ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or ๐ Send us a gift โ https://throne.com/onceuponareef ๐ Follow us: ๐ธ INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy ๐ก PATREON โ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ๐ฅ Poppy's YouTube Channel โ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy ๐ง BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, weโre Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world.
