Lost in the Jungle: When the Path Disappears and the Guide Starts to Pray... 🧭 We arrived in Cheke Village at a blistering speed of 0.8 knots. In the Solomon Islands, you either have fuel or you have patience—we chose the latter. Our stay in Cheke began with the hauntingly beautiful sound of traditional drumming calling the village to prayer. It gave us a moment to reflect on our "unplugged" life. Without the constant noise of the internet, we’ve found a level of focus, memory, and presence that seems impossible in the modern world. But that presence was put to the test when our guide, LuLu, took us on what he promised was a "short walk." Six hours later, we were deep in the primary rainforest, rock-hopping up a winding creek with no trail in sight. When the bush grew too thick and the direction became unclear, LuLu did the only thing he knew to do: he stopped and prayed for the way. Between blown-out shoes held together by jungle vines and LuLu clearing the path with a machete, it was an adventure we won’t soon forget. To recover, we joined LuLu’s wife to learn the art of making Masi Masi—a traditional Solomon delicacy made from pounded taro and coconut cream, meticulously prepared and baked. We even tried our hand at a "Rainbow Spider Cake," only to be overwhelmed once again by the radical generosity of the locals who gifted us the entire feast. We Found a Secret Portal to the Ocean... Hidden in the Jungle 🌴🌀 Just when we thought we had seen it all in the Solomon Islands, our friend John Wayne told us about a place that isn't on any map. To get there, we had to leave the comfort of the boat and hike deep into the interior of the island. It was a brutal trek—barefoot over razor-sharp limestone and through dense, humid bush where the trail frequently disappeared. But the struggle was forgotten the moment the earth opened up beneath us to reveal The Blue Hole. This isn't just a swimming hole; it’s a geological wonder. Mapped by specialist divers, this deep blue eye in the jungle connects to a network of ten underwater caverns that tunnel through the island's bedrock, eventually exiting into the open sea. It is a silent, sacred world home only to fruit bats and a legendary giant eel that guards the depths. To finish our time on the island, we visit a site dedicated to Kesico, the Fishing God. Half-human and half-frigate bird, Kesico is said to have sat upon these rocks, observing the tides and seasons to grant his people the bounty of the sea. No Electricity, No Problem: The Secret to Baking with Hot Stones 🥥🔥 In the remote villages of the Solomon Islands, "low and slow" isn't just a cooking style—it’s a way of life. In this episode, we step into the kitchen of Kerry and his wife to learn the labor-intensive art of making Traditional Cassava Pudding. This isn't your average recipe; it involves hand-grating fresh tapioca, extracting rich cream from coconuts, and a layering process inside flame-seared banana leaves. The real magic, however, lies in the oven. Forget gas or electricity; here, they use recycled 20L fuel drums and intensely heated stones to create a natural convection oven that rivals any modern appliance. We watch as the locals bake fresh bread and slow-cook our pudding for over 12 hours under a mound of rocks and leaves. While the fire does its work, we discover a surprising food: Mangrove Seeds. We learn the meticulous process required to make these bitter seeds edible—a true testament to the resourcefulness of the Solomon people. Clam Shells as Currency? The Ancient Traditions of the Solomons 🐚 In the Solomon Islands, some things are more valuable than gold. In this episode, we are introduced to Shell Money—massive, hand-carved rings made from giant fossilized clam shells. Historically used for everything from land disputes to "buying a wife," these artifacts are a window into a complex social history. But as our friend Rocky shows us, value here isn't just in the past; it's in the craftsmanship of today—from intricate wood carvings to a functional teapot made entirely from a coconut shell. Our time in this village quickly turned from a visit into a deep community connection. We were treated to a rare "floating concert" on our boat, joined the local congregation for a powerful Sabbath service featuring 50 visiting singers, and participated in a massive traditional feast where we learned the humbling local custom of "Guest First." To end the day, we followed the locals into the jungle, paddling up a winding creek to find a secret freshwater swimming hole hidden beneath the rainforest canopy. From Headhunters to Master Artists: The Secrets of Telina Island 🪓 Deep in the Marovo Lagoon lies Telina Island, a place world-renowned for its craftsmanship, but built upon a fierce and shadowed history. In this episode, we step off the boat and into a living museum. We begin by deconstructing the Tomoko—the traditional war canoe. Adorned with shell inlays and spiritual totems, these vessels were designed for both protection and psychological warfare. We learn how ancient warriors used conch shells to synchronize their pace and strike fear into their enemies. But the real magic happens in the hands of the local artisans. Using nothing but basic manual tools, the carvers of Telina produce work that is arguably the best in the world. We were invited into a custom-built display home to witness these masterpieces firsthand, alongside intricate hand-woven baskets and fans that carry the legacy of generations. Finally, we trek up the mountain with our guide, Vyno, to stand where his ancestors stood. We explore the "Hidden Caves"—fortresses tucked into the cliffs where tribes lived in secrecy during the headhunting era. It is a hauntingly beautiful look at how a new belief system transformed a culture of war into a culture of world-class art and peace. Painting the boat black... We Found Squid Paradise! 🦑✨ Sometimes, you drop anchor in a place so special it earns a new name on the charts. Welcome to "Squid Paradise." Our night started with a simple squid jig and ended with the entire boat, even our bed, covered in ink. In this episode, we experience the frantic fun of catching our own dinner right off the back of the boat, proving that the Solomon Islands always provide if you know where to look. But it’s not all ink and action. Between the hunts, we take a moment to breathe. With the help of the drone and our kayaks, we explore the mirror-still waters of the lagoon, sharing poetry and reflections on what it means to truly inhabit a space. Poppy shares a sunset serenade and a reminder that in a world of constant movement, there is immense power in simply "being." Of course, Mother Nature has the final word. We wrap up the episode with a classic lesson in Solomon Islands sailing: a frustrating, beautiful dance of lifting the sails, losing the wind, and doing it all over again. We Sailed to the Equator to Avoid Cyclones. We Were Wrong. ⛈️⛵ They told us cyclones don't form this close to the equator. They told us we were safe in the Solomon Islands. But as the barometer began to drop and the sky turned a bruised purple, we realized we were sitting directly in the path of a developing tropical system. In this episode, our journey through the stunning Marovo Lagoon takes a sharp turn from paradise to survival. Before heading for shelter, we experienced the incredible hospitality of the Solomon people. From our friend Stevenson—who saved us with a "feast" of smoked fish and cassava cake when we were nearly out of food—to the villagers of Cheke, who traded us weeks' worth of fresh produce for a single fishing lure. With the latest weather charts confirming the worst, we retreated deep into a remote river system to hide among the mangroves. For a week, we hunkered down as the storm intensified around us. But surviving the wind and rain was only half the battle; an unexpected encounter up the river forced us to make a hurried exit back to the open sea. Swimming with Dolphins in Crocodile Territory 🐬🐊 | Marovo Lagoon There is a place in the Solomon Islands where the reef drops into a thousand meters of blue, and the water is shared by the ocean’s most playful creatures—and its most feared predators. In this episode, we arrive in Marovo Lagoon, officially the world’s largest saltwater lagoon and a place of staggering biodiversity. We began our journey in the open ocean, jumping off the boat into "the big blue" to swim alongside a pod of dolphins, watching them play beneath our bow. But as we moved deeper into the lagoon toward Pore Pore, the atmosphere changed. The locals here live in a delicate balance with Saltwater Crocodiles. We received some sobering advice: "They are everywhere, but you can still swim... just keep an eye out." From seeing their eyes glowing in the dark to feeling that unmistakable "crocky" instinct while freediving a deep reef wall, this episode is a reminder that in the Solomons, you are always part of the food chain. Forbidden Knowledge? How to Survive Anywhere Using Only Plants 🌿 What if the pharmacy and the grocery store were replaced by the forest floor? Inspired by the book "The Last Wild Island," we journeyed to Tetepare—the largest uninhabited island in the South Pacific—to document a vanishing way of life. Under the guidance of our local expert, Towomy, we went deep into the primary rainforest to learn the ancient secrets of the Solomon Islands. From "Natural Wound Glue" that can close a deep cut, to a plant so powerful it is used to help regrow broken bones, the biodiversity here is a living medical journal. But it’s not just about healing; it’s about survival. We discover how to find water in a pinch, how to forage for wild food, and the traditional customs that have protected these people for centuries—including the eerie "Sea Spirit Deterrents" and the history of the headhunting spears. This isn't just a travel vlog; it’s a tribute to the conservation battle to keep this virgin rainforest standing and a look at the wisdom we lose when these forests disappear. Why This Island Refused to be Logged... 🌴 In a region where ancient forests are rapidly disappearing, one island stands alone. Welcome to Tetepare, known as the "Last Wild Island." After a challenging sail through the unpredictable winds of the Solomon Islands—accompanied by a pod of spinner dolphins—we finally arrived at this conservation miracle. Tetepare is the largest uninhabited tropical island in the Southern Hemisphere, and walking through its primary rainforest is like stepping back a thousand years. While much of the surrounding archipelago has been logged, these giant trees remain standing thanks to a community that chose preservation over profit. But being "wild" comes with a literal bite. In this episode, we trek into the jungle at midnight to find the world’s largest land-living arthropod: the Coconut Crab. The night took a tense turn when we returned to the water’s edge only to find our path blocked by salt-water crocodiles. With no other way back to the boat, we had to find a way to reclaim our kayaks and paddle through the very water where the shadows were moving. We Found Paradise... And The World's Most Dangerous Neighbors 🐊 Remote, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful—welcome to the Solomon Islands. In this episode, we drop anchor in a place where time seems to have stood still. From our very first trade on the water to discovering the deep-rooted history of WWII , our arrival in the Solomons has been nothing short of surreal. But life in paradise isn't all palm trees and turquoise water. We set out for a 300nm passage to the Solomon Islands, but the ocean had other plans. What started as a frustratingly slow crawl to Grassy Islet—taking an entire day just to cover the first 15 miles—quickly turned into a sailor's nightmare. In the middle of the night, the "no wind" struggle vanished, replaced by violent, unpredictable squalls. We fought the elements for hours until the sound we dreaded most echoed through the dark: the screecher finally gave way. With 300 miles of open ocean to cover and a damaged sail, it was a challenging time to say the least. From the exhaustion of the storm to a breathtaking 3:00 AM arrival guided by dolphins and shooting stars, you really seem to experience the full spectrum of life out here.
