In D-Log 310, I tackle two problems with our caravan: a Dometic RM1270 fridge that had stopped working and an external fresh-water pump that appears to have been damaged after running dry. The Dometic caravan fridge had developed a couple of faults. When switched to 230V electric, it would trip the shore-power supply at the house, and when I tried running it on LPG gas, it wouldn't light. After ringing around caravan repair companies, the cheapest quote I received was around £240. So before booking it in, I did some research and decided to carry out some fault finding myself. In the video I explain how I diagnosed the electrical problem, including resistance checks with a multimeter, before removing the Dometic RM1270 fridge from the caravan and replacing the 230V heating element. While the fridge was out, I also cleaned the gas burner and burner area, which sorted the gas problem. The result? The fridge is now working again on both 230V electric and gas. ⚡ IMPORTANT: Caravan mains electricity and LPG gas can be dangerous. This video shows what I did to my own caravan and isn't a substitute for professional advice. If you're not competent and confident working with 230V electrical systems or LPG appliances, use a suitably qualified technician. Always isolate electrical supplies before carrying out resistance tests. There was also another caravan problem to sort out – no fresh water. The external water pump appears to have been allowed to run dry and damaged internally. As a temporary fix, I removed the working water pump from our camper van/motorhome and fitted it to the caravan, getting the water system working again. So that's two caravan repairs in one day – a Dometic fridge repair and a caravan fresh-water pump replacement. If you're having problems with a Dometic RM1270 caravan fridge, your caravan fridge is tripping the electric, it works on neither electric nor gas, or your caravan water pump has stopped working, hopefully my experience gives you some useful pointers for diagnosing the problem. Life doesn’t always follow the plans you make. Following the sad passing of Jen’s dad, we’ve returned to the UK to be with family and, most importantly, to help and support Jen’s mum. That means our plans have changed and, for the next few months at least, life is going to look rather different. But this definitely isn’t the end of our sailing life. The boat is still in Greece, we’ll still be returning to her, and sailing will continue to be a big part of our lives and this channel. For now, though, we’re going to be spending considerably more time in the UK. Fortunately, we have another couple of ways of living that might feel surprisingly familiar to anyone who has followed our life aboard — our caravan and motorhome. So in this D-Log I talk about what happens next, how our videos are going to change, and why you might start seeing a little more caravan life, motorhome travel and UK adventures alongside the sailing. In many ways, boat life, caravan life and motorhome life have a lot in common: living in a relatively small space, managing water and power, making the most of what you've got and having the freedom to explore. Perhaps this isn't really a change of direction at all. Can a simple rubber snubber really make a difference when anchoring a yacht? In J-Log 190, Jenny looks at the benefits of adding a rubber mooring compensator to our anchor snubber and why such a small piece of equipment can make life at anchor noticeably more comfortable. When a yacht is anchored in stronger winds or a choppy sea, the movement of the boat can create sudden shock loads through the anchor snubber and chain. Adding a rubber snubber provides extra elasticity, helping absorb some of those loads before they are transferred to the boat and anchoring system. Jenny explains why we use one aboard our yacht and how it can help reduce snatching, noise and sudden loads on the anchor gear. This week’s D-Log might be one of the most important (and overlooked) topics we’ve covered in a while… Jubilee clips. Not the most exciting bit of kit onboard… but absolutely critical. 🔧 Why This Matters If you think about it, jubilee clips are everywhere on a boat: Engine cooling systems Fuel lines Freshwater systems Bilge pumps Exhaust hoses Anywhere you’ve got a hose… you’ve probably got a clip holding it in place. And if that clip fails—especially below the waterline—you’re not just dealing with a leak… 👉 You could be dealing with a sinking boat. ⚠️ What We Cover in This Video In this D-Log, I break down everything you need to know, including: Why jubilee clips fail (corrosion, vibration, poor quality, overtightening) The difference between cut-out and grooved thread clips Why cheaper clips can actually damage your hoses The key differences between 304 and 316 stainless steel Why 316 (especially 316L) is the only real choice for marine use Why anything below the waterline should ALWAYS be double clipped 🛠️ Simple Checks That Could Save Your Boat This is one of those jobs that takes minutes… but could prevent a disaster. ✔ Check for corrosion or rust ✔ Look for pitting or sharp edges ✔ Make sure clips are tight (but not overtightened) ✔ Upgrade to 316 stainless grooved clips where needed ✔ Double clip all below-waterline hoses 💡 Final Thought It’s easy to ignore the small stuff onboard… But often, it’s the smallest components that cause the biggest problems. Have you ever put off learning a boating skill because it looked too difficult? That was me... until now. In this video, I take on my first ever splicing project after new marina rules meant I had to rethink how I secure Dream to the pontoon. The marina's newly installed pontoons no longer allow metal springs to be attached directly, so I came up with a simple solution using spliced rope strops, stainless steel thimbles and my existing mooring springs. I explain why I made the change, show you the finished installation, and share what I learnt from tackling a skill I'd never attempted before.
