Episode 38:
The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived: it's time for the survey. Two surveyors came to uncover the full extent of the damage to our boat. From sanding down the keel area, to various hammering techniques, to using an endoscope inside the stringers - what they found was partly expected and partly shocking: cracks, unconnected layers and even water where it shouldn't be
It's been a very emotional process so far - dismantling, setbacks, discoveries and lots of learning, but now we finally have some answers and some news for us - but are they really positive?
Join us as we get through this exciting day.

Episode 357 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we slip the mooring line after the storms had passed and made our way to Ketu Bay. We had heard that there was good fishing to be found in this bay and after days and days of trying, Rhonda caught two Gurnards (after getting some fresh bait from a near by yacht).

Hello Friends,
On this episode I explore Meretoto / Ship Cove and try to image Captain Cook sailing into the bay and anchoring The Endeavour and the Resolution for repair and replenishment.

In this episode, we take a break from boat work to explore Tahuata in the Marquises (French Polynesia). Thauata is the neighbor island to Hiva Ova and is even a bit more exotic to us than Hiva Ova. Dolphins and gigantic manta rays, sharks and so much to discover. We do some hiking and even play with dolphins so close we could even touch them if we did not know better. We move BE FREE to the neighboring bay for some shopping and to get petrol for our dinghy. After a beautiful experience again with amazingly friendly Polynesians we move back to our favorite beach with lots of fruits and even managed to get some petrol for our dinghy. Our opinion so far is the beach in Thauata is the prettiest in the Marquises. We also say See you later to our new Norwegian friends that are sailing in the opposite direction for now. French Polynesia is really amazing and we truly enjoy our stay here.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the pacific ocean.
Even though this is season 5 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Medetorian prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
This week, I am still in Sint Maarten, finishing up some minor projects before tackling one of the biggest changes on this boat yet! Day-to-day life on a sailboat during project season can get a bit mundane and uneventful, but it's a large part of this life that allows us to eventually get off-grid and explore remote places!

Give a little extra support 💞 The circumnavigation is JUST beginning... all of your help goes towards more gear to make the videos a bit better and the boat safer and more functional for myself as a single hand (and maybe an extra treat for Mako)

My first Atlantic crossing. I am alone on the 12-metre REYKJA, a 35-year-old steel yacht. It's going from La Palma, Canary Islands, directly to Domenica, Caribbean. The distance is 2790 nautical miles, more than 5000 kilometres. It takes me 24 days.
I cross the Atlantic in February. Sailing in the trade winds is not terribly difficult, but it has its pitfalls. In February, the wind blows stronger than in the months before. When the waves go up, the ship starts to roll strongly. Even sleeping becomes an adventure: where do I cling to without being tossed around? If the genoa, the largest sail, breaks just before the destination, you are suddenly quite lonely as a solo sailor.
My conclusion from almost four weeks at sea? Strong stuff!
Winner of the European Yacht of the Year 2025 in the Luxury category, the Contest 63CS instantly impresses. Above deck, this 19.3m yacht has been customised for single-handed, push-button sailing with electric or hydraulic everything, all with manual back-up for contingency. Her flush foredeck and aft sea terrace promise socialising and sunbathing in equal measure, and down below there's a sophisticated, stylish interior full of bright ideas, clean sightlines and impeccable workmanship.
We love reviewing yachts for you, but it costs money and pays nothing – for the moment, at least.

Interested in a bluewater sailboat like a Hinkley or perhaps a Robert Perry or Carl Alberg design? Do you want to sail to the Bahamas or Caribbean but also potentially cross an ocean? We know we need heavy bluewater sailboats sometimes and when looking for a cheap sailboat, we love Taiwan built boats, particularly int he Ta Shing boat yard. This week we take a look at the Mason 44 and Mason 43 as potential blue water cruising sailboats.

I was really looking forward to a night sail... but the engine had other ideas. My brand new engine from May has struggled to start quite a few times in the past few months; however, Sunpower Diesel pushed it off and didn't respond. Now I have another big issue. Follow along as I clean the engine out and get it to work!

This week it's a beautiful curved bulkhead grab handle, Najad style! And a feature wall with a really cool Lewmar porthole!
Handcrafting our VW van, focussing on some epic features that will transform our project. It's these little things that the boatbuilder in Chris enjoys putting the extra effort in for.

In this episode we aren't waisting any time...we're selling it all to prepare to be a full-time sailing family. If we are going to buy a sailing #catamaran and live on a #sailboat we have to offload even more stuff than we did when we became a full time RV family. All of that is much easier said that done! These big life decisions come with challenges and emotions as we process through what it means to give up our house and everything we have on land in order to take our lives to the water. There will be several parts to "Preparing to be a full time sailing family" as we show you the entire process of becoming a sailing family. We're so thankful for your views, likes, subscribes, comments and all the love!
Here's to more moments, more memories, more Saturdays! 🥂
