THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route: Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.

Welcome to The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.

I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a gopro.

After final touch-ups and new crew addition - Z's mom is back on Aquarius for the 5th time we are ready to drop the lines and start Season 8 of Sailing Aquarius.
It's a big season for us as we hope to finish circumnavigation in February 2024.
But we still have a long way to go - we are currently in Barcelona planning our first sail to Balearics, Mallorca where we will be waiting for the winds to go south - Gibraltar, then the Canaries to wait for the trade winds to cross the Atlantic ocean. But we will take one step at a time as it's not an easy task for sure. So please wish us lots of luck and subscribe if you haven't yet - we really would like to have 50,000 subscribers when we finish our sailing around the world.

This video starts off with an update to the current status of our Leopard 45 warranty repairs. We're continuing to work with Leopard Catamarans and look forward to the arrival of a new team who can assist with finishing the rectification and repairs, and bring us closer to finally being back on the water.

As a liveaboard cruiser there are so many skills you can develop to become more self sufficient, including splicing ropes, sewing canvas, servicing your engines, and doing certain repairs. In this episode, I decide to try my hand at gel coat finishing!

While Tynan is relatively proficient at applying gel coat, none of us really know what we're doing when it comes to finishing, so I gave it a go. A positive attitude and good work ethic can get you a long way when it comes to learning new skills!

On this episode I visit a number of different bays around Great Barrier after riding out some bad weather and position myself at Bowling Alley Bay to sail to Waiheke for an approaching cyclone.

Great Barrier Island was everything people told me it would be. Beautiful, Wild and with very few boats or people around. It is a must visit if you are cruising in NZ.

Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #218

Hello Friends,

On this episode I get a fly by from a Blackhawk Helicopter piloted by my friend Bryan Wilson (Thank you for your service and the fly by)

Then I go on a dinghy excursion to look for a good place to snorkel. Traveling north through incredibly clear waters I turn back at Yokohama Beach and return to Triteia. Once back onboard I swim ashore and walk south down Makua Beach to explore the extensive reef system that makes up the southern end of the bay.

I enjoy my last golden hour on the beach and try and take it all in.

My longest blue water trip, 35 days at sea. I sail alone on Reykja, a 35 year old steel yacht. It goes through the Panama Canal to Hiva Oa, French Polynesia. The distance is about 8000 kilometers. This part of the Pacific is remote, I don't see a single ship during the whole time. But many other things.

Now that we have finished up the first half of Season 7 where we anchored all around Catalina Island for 10 days I thought it would be good to make a few videos demystifying anchoring for anyone who has never anchored and wants to expand their cruising grounds.

As I mention in the video this is at the "Quick and Dirty" version almost like the "Cliffs Notes" of what you NEED and NEED to know. In this video I explain what Ground Tackle is and how important it is to understand Scope and what to do if you find yourself dragging anchor.

I will be doing a longer versions that might be a few episodes getting deeper into Anchors, Rode, Anchorages, Techniques and more.
