Why I Set Out to Explore Japan's Longevity Hotspots
Why do some people remain healthy, active, and independent well into their eighties and nineties, while others experience years of decline? That question sent me on a two-year journey across Japan. Using prefectural health and longevity data as my compass, I set out to visit communities where healthy lifespan extends well beyond Japan's national average. Along the way, I discovered that the answers were rarely found in diet alone. They were woven into community, purpose, curiosity, belonging, and the rhythms of everyday life. This short clip was recorded during a panel discussion at an @IaforOrg conference, where I shared the thinking behind my ongoing research and my forthcoming book, Longevity and the Art of Community: Lessons from Japan. About me: I'm Lowell Sheppard, 71, author, sailor, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. I'm the Founder of the Never Too Late Academy and Special Advisor to the International Academic Forum (IAFOR). Through Japan Solo Field Notes, I explore healthy aging, community, and longevity across Japan.
