We found a Dunkirk Little Ship in the most unexpected place & sailed across the English channel.

Ep 6: To get our sailboat into the French Canals, first we must cross the English Channel, but why do this from Ramsgate? Our boat is more than 30 feet long and definitely less than 100 feet so, it is within the length bracket to be requisitioned by the navy, if this was May 1940. The beaches at Dunkirk, the Little Ships and the dangerous channel crossing, feature in films and documentaries recounting the evacuation of soldiers from northern France. The success of Operation Dynamo relied upon civilian boats to assist the Royal Navy. Requisitioned boats were checked over and put to sea from Ramsgate. We crossed the channel along the same route, avoiding the wreck ridden Goodwin Sands. Our passage plan also had to include safe crossing of the commercial Traffic Separation Scheme lanes - these didn't exist in 1940, but enemy attacks from the air made the Little Ships passage far more dangerous. We had planned this route well in advance of our encounter with a Little Ship far away across the Atlantic. But what a find!
