Volvo Ocean 60
The Volvo Ocean 60 (VO60) is a legendary class of offshore racing sailboat that played a crucial role in the evolution of the world's most prestigious around-the-world yacht race - originally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, later rebranded as the Volvo Ocean Race, and now known as The Ocean Race. In this episode, we sail aboard Wolfhound, a 1997 Volvo Ocean 60 based in The Port of Long Beach, Wilmington, California. Designed by Bruce Farr, Wolfhound was originally "Merit Cup", built by Martin Marine. She finished in 2nd place competing in the Whitbread 1997/1998 and skippered by Grant Dalton. In 19 knots of wind the vessel easily cruises at 14.3 knots and everyone aboard this social sail is having an extraordinary day. The Volvo Ocean 60 bridged the gap between the traditional heavy maxis and the more modern, faster VO70s. Many VO60s were sold post-race into private hands and are still racing or cruising. Capable of sustained speeds over 25 knots in the right conditions, the Volvo Ocean 60 was designed for extreme conditions in the Southern Ocean. All winches and sail controls are powered entirely by human effort and can withstand some of the most punishing legs in offshore racing. The Volvo Ocean 60 hull material is composite, made of carbon fiber and kevlar. The LOA is 64 feet and has a beam of 17' 2". The draft is 12'3" and has a carbon fiber mast that is 90 feet tall with 4 spreaders and a sail area of 1,937 sq ft upwind and 3,550 sq ft downwind. Let's go FAST!
