The GranOcean W-72 is a Category A offshore power catamaran, and in this conversation the people who build it explain what's underneath the finish: closed-cell foam core with vinylester resin infusion throughout, propulsion systems kept fully independent from the hotel load, an inverter bypass so you never lose navigation, and a raised bridge deck engineered to stop the slamming that keeps monohull owners away from catamarans. Filmed aboard the W-72 with the GranOcean team. QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS VIDEO Why do catamarans slam, and how do you stop it? Slamming happens when waves strike the underside of the bridge deck. It creates noise, vibration through the whole boat, and drag that slows you down. The fix is bridge deck clearance: the W-72 is built with enough height that the waves pass underneath. GranOcean says this is the single biggest reason monohull owners hesitate to switch to catamarans, and it's why clearance increases as their boats get larger. How is the GranOcean W-72 built? The entire boat is composite: a closed-cell foam core sandwiched between fiberglass skins, resin-infused so the resin travels through perforations in the core and forms tiny I-beam structures throughout. That construction runs through the hull, the bulkheads, and every major component. Why vinylester resin instead of polyester? Many builders use vinylester only as a barrier coat below the waterline to resist osmosis. GranOcean uses it structurally throughout, because vinylester is significantly stronger than polyester. What happens if the electrical system fails offshore? The W-72 separates propulsion from the hotel systems and adds a bypass switch. If the inverter fails, generators can power the fridges, lights, and navigation. If the house batteries are done, engine alternators can power the navigation systems directly. The engines stay independent of everything else, so you can always get home. How fuel efficient is a power catamaran? At displacement speed, roughly 8 to 10 knots, consumption is low, and the boat runs about 30 liters per hour at 11 knots. The advantage over a trawler is optionality: cruise slowly and efficiently, or run fast when you need to outrun weather. Where are GranOcean catamarans built?
