The 31m Yacht That’s Far More Advanced Than She Looks | VANADIS

At first glance, VANADIS may look like a relatively conventional 100-foot white yacht. But after learning more about her design, construction and particularly her propulsion system, it quickly became clear that this is no ordinary yacht. Built in 2019, VANADIS has a full-displacement aluminium hull with a bulbous bow and an aluminium superstructure. Her hull uses an aluminium-magnesium alloy, chosen for its resistance to corrosion and its welding characteristics. She is powered by two CAT C9.3 380hp engines and has a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 13 knots. The owner and his family had already owned several vessels before building VANADIS and knew exactly what they wanted. One priority was a large sun deck, and VANADIS certainly delivers. There is an enormous bar, plenty of seating, an electric sun awning, another removable awning and a grill area designed for relaxed time on board with family and friends. Inside, the yacht feels elegant, light and considerably larger than David expected. The layout was carefully adapted to make better use of the available space, while the galley benefits from an unusual but very practical position. The pilothouse is also particularly well equipped, with doors leading directly to the side decks and wing stations on both sides. The accommodation was designed around the owner's preference for three generously sized cabins rather than trying to maximise the number of guests. The full-beam owner's stateroom is spacious and beautifully appointed, with large windows, a sofa area, walk-in closet and a well-proportioned bathroom. But the most fascinating part of VANADIS is her hybrid propulsion system. Two variable-speed generators provide power to a bus bar, which distributes that power wherever it is required, including to the electric motors used for propulsion. The system is designed so that the generators respond to the yacht's actual power requirements rather than continually producing the same amount of power. The shafts can also generate power that is fed back into the system. For the owner, this translates into better fuel economy and greater range. VANADIS can achieve approximately 2,700 nautical miles at 10 knots, while her rotating propulsion pods also allow the yacht to turn on herself, move sideways or maintain position using the dynamic positioning system. David admits that he completely misjudged VANADIS before stepping aboard. What initially appeared to be a relatively conventional yacht revealed itself to be something quite unique and exceptional, combining thoughtful design, quality materials and an intelligent propulsion system.
