BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow talks to Benny Quinn, Yamaha Master Technician at Annapolis Boat Sales, about the things you should check before you take your boat out on the water every time. By using this predeparture checklist before taking your boat out, you'll minimize potential problems that may leave you calling for a tow. In addition to whatever your four-stroke outboard engine's owners manual says, Benny says that before you take your boat out, you should first check the oil level. Then ensure that the mounting bolts are secure but not too tight as to crack the gelcoat on the back side of the transom. Check your propeller and lower unit, and finally check the cowling to ensure that no birds have made nests inside. And don't forget to make sure that your telltale is not blocked and water is flowing freely.
