They may have been off the recon radar for a week doing pure AC40 training for the Youth & Women’s teams, but it has been all action down in Cagliari with the LEQ12 undergoing some significant upgrades - most notably some changes to the starboard wing and uprated control panels in the cockpits. Coming back out onto the pure summer waters of Sardinia with the nailed-on sea breezes, the team barely looked like they had missed a beat and were keen to get into data gathering through their usual high-pressure bear-aways and rapid turn-up manoeuvres that they favour, before throwing in some marks and getting time-on-distance practice and short-course race coverage. Speaking after what was a relatively short, late afternoon session due to some technical issues in harbour delaying dock-out, Michele Cannoni, the Boat Captain, gave a wide-ranging interview summing up the day, speaking about the AC40 training last week and talking through the dockside issues before a fascinating interpolation of the new wing when pressed as to whether it was a ‘copy’ of other teams’ long-span anhedral foils: “maybe all the teams are getting to something similar let's say…” Solid afternoon for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the LEQ12. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
