Today I decided to attempt my first long distance challenge. The club has put togther 2 challenges this year to make life on the lake a little more interesting and has opened them up to the bigger boats too! One of these is the long distance challenge and we become the first Drascombe Lugger to do it and we pick a day that has the wind quickly building and has us heeling so much the gunnels are in the water on a few occassions! The gusts today were like nothing I've ever felt before. I've been in string winds than 35mph, but these gusts came so suddenly they thumped the sails when they came and knocked the boat quite hard. We actually messed up our first attempt. I didn;t realise that the south marker was the weather station and not the race marker, nearly 1.5 miles furtehr on. Needless to say the made for an amazing shakedown sail and a lot of fun was had! Enjoy! 00:00 Intro 00:28 To the start! 01:22 The callenge explained 03:02 A tough beat to the start line!!! 06:54 We start the challenge! 07:52 Reaching down 13:36 Missing the mark!!! 14:34 A huge gust 15:06 7.4mph - A record!!! 17:58 Beating back 26:27 Aiming for the tack 31:10 The home straight!! 32:12 One last gust!!! 32:46 What a day!! ?
