The new Lombard design proved to be quite comfortable in these light conditions: it glided along at over 7 knots under gennaker and was just begging to stretch out its two wakes behind it. The Excess 13 was undoubtedly one of the most eagerly awaited World Premieres at La Grande-Motte... this model is indeed unlike any other, starting with the fact that it bears a somewhat risky name – but we love it! And almost as a punchline to complete the joke, 13 units were sold on the opening day of the show... More seriously though, the main new thing about this catamaran is the signature it bears. The Lombard design team has been at work here, in collaboration with Jean Marc Piaton for the interior design. We discovered a nacelle of contained volume (as evidenced by the very wide side-decks), a galley that opens onto the cockpit, and fold-down sugarscoops. We like the futuristic design of the davits and the imposing span of the folding helm seats and the airy design of their protective biminis. Also noteworthy is a water recovery system on the coachroof, easy-access circuit breakers (at last) in a dedicated locker, and cabin doors that double as closet doors. “Jabulo” is a 2002 Dean 440 catamaran, built by Dean Catamarans in Capetown, South Africa. She has been our full time live-aboard cruising home in French Polynesia for the past 3 years, however health concerns now mean we must change our lifestyle. In the pursuit of extreme seaworthiness, all Dean Catamarans feature very buoyant full bows with the bridge deck carried well forward and small trampoline area. They feature asymmetrical hulls, where the outside curvature is much greater than the inner hull curvature, resulting in a reduced wave forming action between the hulls (reduced venturi effect). This, coupled with a high bridge deck clearance dramatically reduces under bridge deck slamming, while also improving overall performance. Another feature of Dean Catamaran’s are the mast which is raked aft by 7 degrees. This unusual feature assists both the yachts upwind performance, and its ability to tack through the wind without the difficulties associated with some other catamarans. ► Full test in Multihulls World N°202: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/trimaran/dragonfly-36-performance-for-gliding-along-as-fast-as-the-wind ► We had the opportunity to sail aboard the Dragonfly 36, recently elected Multihull of the Year in the Sail Performance category, in the company of Jens Quorning, the head of the shipyard which bears his name. This trimaran, in its Performance version (with a rig that is over six feet / 2 meters taller) is undoubtedly a fast and enjoyable multihull to sail. Without too much effort, you can be sailing at the windspeed... In terms of design, the 36 is the first Dragonfly to feature three inverted bows - until now, the central hull has always retained a traditional bow shape. Below deck, the new interior design features double cabins forward and aft, a separate bathroom, a fully equipped galley and a spacious saloon. The standard finish is in ash, with elm as an option. Like all Dragonfly models, this trimaran can be folded thanks to its optimized Swing Wing system. It takes just 1 minute and 30 seconds to reduce the width from 26’8” (8.12 m) down to 12’2” (3.7 m). As for the pivoting appendages, they make it very easy to take the ground, as we were able to see for ourselves. By the end of the International Multihull Show, the shipyard had already taken 27 orders, representing more than two years’ worth of production... This Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479, Rafano III, offers the perfect balance of performance, comfort and ease of handling. Her current owners have maintained to her to a high standard and many things have been renewed and updated the last 2 years. She is cutter rigged with a full batten main from 2024, a Genoa from 2024, staysail, new Lazy Jacks and Lazy Bag, electric furlers, electric winches, and Selden spinnaker gear. She is furthermore equipped with an 80 hp diesel engine, bow thruster, folding prop, lithium batteries, solar panels, and a full Raymarine navigation package. On top of that a new custom-made bimini and sprayhood from 2024, tender with outboard engine from 2024, and a life raft. The best places to relax on this yacht are the spacious cockpit with comfortable bench seats and drop-leaf table, the foredeck with large sunbed, and the hydraulic fold down bathing platform for direct access to the water. The interior of this Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 is light and airy interior thanks to the many hull ports and overhead hatches. The L-shaped galley is located aft to starboard and is fitted out with a double stainless-steel sink, a 3-burner gas stove with oven and grill, microwave oven, a fridge and a freezer.
