The people of Porto hold a huge celebration for the festival of SĂŁo JoĂŁo (Saint John) on 23rd June. And by luck we were in Porto on the day after the festival, when the Rabelo Boat Regatta is held on the River Douro in the heart of the City. These shallow, flat bottom boats were originally used to transport the Port wine from the vineyards on the steep slopes of the extensive Douro River to the wineries in Porto, for ageing. These traditional boats were beginning to disappear by the early 1980s, so the Winery Brotherhood initiated the regatta, in which all of the major wineries are represented by their own boat each year.

Mark your calendars and double your yoga classesâSEVENTY48 is back, and itâs kicking off earlier than ever. On Friday, May 29, 2026, at 7:00 PM, a human-powered flotilla will launch from the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma. 70 miles. 48 hours. No support. No sails. No engines. Just you and your muscle fibers. This is a race against the tide, the current, the clockâand maybe that voice in your head that asks what on earth you're doing out here. Whether youâre racing to win or for some other reason, SEVENTY48 doesnât care how you do itâas long as itâs 100% human-powered. Kayaks, SUPs, pedal boats, rowboats, outrigger canoes, inflatable flamingos retrofitted with bike cranksâif it moves without wind or fuel, itâs fair game. And yes, there are prizes. The total prize pot typically tops $10,000 (based on the number of racers at the starting line), and the first to finish takes half of it. The rest is split evenly between three class winners and one Random Heroâchosen from the finishers, so even last place has a chance at the cash. Registration opens November 15. https://seventy48.com/ đ„: Ryder Booth
