Ela foi projetada para compensar a diferença no ângulo de ataque do vento entre uma genoa e um spinnaker. O que importa durante as manobras é muito mais fácil do que com um balão, é a vela ideal se tiver uma tripulação pequena. Devido à sua geometria, um gennaker tem menos probabilidade de entrar em colapso do que um spinnaker, tornando-a uma vela de suporte mais estável.
