La giornata comincia blu, come gli scorsi giorni. La differenza è quel leggero rollio che viene sottolineato da qualsiasi cosa sia appesa in barca. Ci svegliamo, facciamo colazione e aspettiamo il vento. Oggi è martedì. Qualsiasi applicazione meteo dice che entrerà aria tesa. Dopo colazione il cielo si incupisce, nuvole scure si avvicinano verso di noi e, così, decidiamo di prevenire prendendo la seconda mano di terzaroli. Cosa vuol dire? Significa ridurre la superficie di vela esposta all’aria. Quando il vento aumenta è importante regolare le vele al fine di non farsi trovare troppo invelati. E così, facciamo. Prendiamo la seconda mano. Come da programmi, il vento si presenta puntuale, in compagnia di un po’ di pioggia non invitata. Ma per fortuna, lei resta per poco. L’aria invece no. Un fresco vento al traverso ci fa galoppare verso le Azzorre. Julia vola, si toglie di dosso tutte le miglia in cui ha tenuto le ali riposte in attesa di queste condizioni. Da previsioni questa pressione sulle vele dovrebbe accompagnarci per un po’ di giorni e noi, con un gran sorriso, le diamo il benvenuto a bordo. Un motore gratuito che riesce a vincere a mani basse contro lo scoppio rombante di un motore diesel da 100 cavalli. Avanti tutta Julia, corriamo insieme verso la meta. Andrea

The 27th Annual Dana West Yacht Club Charity Regatta, off the coast of Dana Point in Southern California had 21 boats competing. Sometimes boats try to occupy the same space on the water and that's when collisions occur. During this race, two Catalina 385's, Marblehead and Tomol, tried to do just that and crashed into each other. Who is at fault and how could this collision have been avoided? No more propane on our boat! All electric baby! With 920 Watts of solar installed, we decided to gut the old propane stove and rebuild it with an electric induction cooktop. It was actually easier than we thought, and involved drilling out a few rivets and repurposing some parts. The result ended up looking pretty great, and we even have a shelf in the middle for storing pots and pans. Unfortunately, only a single burner induction cooktop would fit, so we’ll have to make do. We moved the microwave to the bottom of the stove, which frees up some much needed counter space. We purchased a small countertop convection toaster oven so we can still toast and bake things, if needed. Have you ever thought about doing this? This behind the scenes video gives some insight into why I chose the imagery that I did for this 8 layer handmade reduction linoprint, inspired by Janus, an ancient Roman god, the origin story of the Roman calendar month name of January. This video is part 1 of a 12 part series, I am challenging myself to create one new print per month based on the origin of month names from the ancient roman calendar. To be historically accurate Janus is typically presented as a two headed man, but I put my own artistic twist on this, and I hope you like it as much as I hugely enjoyed making it.
