Why do we call the left side of a boat “port”? For centuries, sailors actually called the left side “larboard,” while the right side was “starboard.” The problem was that larboard and starboard sounded dangerously similar, especially when shouted across a ship in bad weather or during a maneuver. Historically, ships commonly came alongside with their left side facing the dock, in part because steering gear was often mounted on the starboard side. Over time, “port” became the clearer term for the left side, and by the 1800s navies formally adopted it to eliminate confusion. So “port” was not the original name. It replaced “larboard” because it was safer, clearer, and already tied to the side of the ship that commonly faced the dock. #sailing #sailboat #sailingschool
