Living on a sailboat, we come across the authorities far more often than you might expect! In the Mediterranean we experienced the Algerian and Croatian navy (Algerian was super stressful!!), and the Italian financial police, but Trinidad is the first time we've been stopped by the coast guard. It was late at night, around midnight, when we saw their blue flashing lights come at us as we motored through the First Bocas, returning to Trinidad after months sailing up and down the Caribbean island chain. A favorite stop during our Sea of Cortez/Midriff Islands dive trips is Bahia de Los Angeles where we snorkel with whale sharks. These gentle giants come into this bay to feed. We use the local boats to take us into the bay. The crew looks for the whale sharks and then 4 people can get into the water with them. Sometimes they swim by quickly (there is absolutely no way to keep up with them ) and sometimes they are just happy to eat. We can even see multiple whale sharks at one time! Remember the three rules of snorkeling with whale sharks: 1) Don't touch the whale shark, 2) Don't touch the whale shark, and 3) Don't touch the whale shark. He he he!
