Giorno 55 - direzione Malaga (ci arriveremo?) Oggi partiamo con una domanda: Chi di voi ha insultato Eolo, Nettuno e tutta la combriccola? Perché vento, mare e piogge ci stanno mettendo alla prova. Noi proseguiamo verso SO perché il tempo stringe e il 29 dobbiamo esser a Cadice. Ma diciamo che se non avessimo scadenze a breve termine mai e poi mai faremmo miglia su miglia con vento e corrente a sfavore. A che scopo? Dato che qui uno scopo ce l’abbiamo, le stiamo provando tutte. Oggi per esempio è stato un tormento. Il mare non ha mollato un secondo e anche adesso che navighiamo di notte, veniamo sballottati un po’ da tutte le parti. Hanno perfino dato un nome alla perturbazione che arriva da ovest in questo periodo: il ciclone atlantico . No dico, proprio adesso? 😂 Ironia a parte, proseguiamo verso Malaga. Puntiamo lì, ma nelle prossime ore valutiamo se fare sosta tecnica ad Almeria (100 miglia più vicina). Oggi nelle storie c’è stato un avvincente duello che ha visto il caffè e il gas protagonisti. In serata ha dato un cenno di vita, forse la centrifuga delle onde ha mosso un’ostruzione o chi lo sa. Domani funzionerà? Lo scopriremo insieme 😄 A domani! ► Las Palmas, almost an unavoidable stopover on the Atlantic route from Europe, welcomed thousands of sailors during the month of November, when the north-easterly trade winds begin to set in. These crews included a total of 1,300 sailors flying the ARC colors (ARC and ARC +) aboard 253 sailboats. During our visits to the pontoons, we got a measure of the Starlink revolution: only one entrant was equipped last year, compared with 80% of the fleet today... The quality of the connections offered by this satellite operator makes it possible to efficiently follow weather developments, keep in touch those ashore and even work as if at the office! For the first time since we’ve been following ocean-going crews, Vincent, aboard Outremer 51 Piment Rouge, will be sharing his transatlantic passage with us via his videos, which we’ll be relaying. Another special feature of this 2023 edition will be the large number of diesel cans strapped to the guardwires: in a context of very light winds, unusual for the season, the engines (authorized with a penalty for the Multihull category) are likely to be much in demand aboard many of the multihulls. After two weeks of seminars, meetings and safety inspections, the atmosphere on the docks was becoming truly electric during the last three days running up to the start. Studying the weather, stocking up on fresh supplies, washing fruit and vegetables - everyone realized that there was an ocean to cross... Some crew members are more Zen than others: the oldest sailor in the ARC, Joff Hutchinson, 89, declared: “I’ve been sailing for 82 years and I’ve always wanted to cross the Atlantic. Now that my sons have retired, there’s no better time”. Steve turned off the tractor for an afternoon to talk about building the very first pair of Kindred skis. Steve is a skilled storyteller. He seems to know exactly when to pause, when to exaggerate, and exactly when to tell a joke. This ability to draw people in and make them laugh is especially useful in the hospitality industry. You see, Steve and his wife Carolyn run Two Eagles Lodge Bed and Breakfast just South of us in Union Bay. Like many home-based-businesses owners, this couple does it all. Carolyn masterfully orchestrates the business and is logistics manager of the steady rotation of guests while Steve is maintenance man and groundskeeper. When it comes to guest experiences this is where Steve’s hospitable nature and gift for storytelling shines. Who doesn’t want a host who keeps the mood light, and primes you for making memories by recalling his own adventures? If you need more proof of what us locals already know: that you’d be wise to stay at Two Eagles (once things get back to normal...) check out the miles-long list of accolades on their website.
