The River Class is the oldest class racing on Strangford Lough and the fleet of 12 boats which first raced at Royal Ulster Yacht Club have now moved to Strangford Lough Yacht Club (SLYC). The boats were designed by naval architect Alfred Mylne and their origins trace back to 1919 when Belfast Lough sailors were looking for a simple and elegant one-design class to race. The pre war Mylne designs have lovey long line that making them timeless beauties amongst classic boat fleets. The owner of these timeless racer maintain traditions of the early days of racing ensure that the boats continue to race hard under strict one design rules ignoring the temptation to allow modern ropes and sail clothes to alter a formula that was worked so well for over a century of racing.
