Tunisia bound aboard our sailboat Kaia 🇹🇳 ⛵️ Waiting for the right weather window, we consider factors such as wind patterns and sea states to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. As we set off from Sardinia, we bid farewell to it’s stunning coastline dotted with rugged cliffs and azure waters. We sail southward, into the immense open sea, with only the sound of the wind and waves for company. 48hours of non-stop sailing lays ahead! Navigating the Mediterranean waters requires careful navigation and seamanship. We keep a lookout for other vessels as we sail under the moonlight. It’s difficult to explain the feeling of freedom as our boat glides through the endless expanse of blue. We approach the coastline of Tunisia, marvelling at the sight of the ancient ruins and bustling ports. After two days of sailing, arriving in Monastir marks the culmination of our voyage (our longest sail yet). We dock the boat and can’t wait to step ashore and discover the rich and vibrant culture of Tunisian culture, our new home for the next few months! Day 2 of the Geelong Festival of Sails saw the two MC 31s enjoying some moderate breezes for 3 windward leeward races on Corio Bay which gave the two boats their first opportunity to race downwind.

This week I visited Antalya, where the ARES shipyard held the launching ceremony for their magnificent 62 meter cruising ketch "SIMENA". Launched in the latter years of Kim Holman's short but stellar design career, DICER belongs to a lineage of wholesome and fine cruising ketches he developed with Claude Whisstock. Full specs and story at the link:http://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/539/DICER The first, in 1958, was the 38ft LANDFALL for Claude himself who wanted the long keel directional stability and drying out ability he'd been used to in more traditional vessels, but much more beam, and modern comforts. The concept really worked and orders flowed for more like her: the "LANDFALL Ketches", ranging in size from the mid 30s to 44 feet. A contemporary Whisstock’s brochure stated: "...these yachts have become a class by popular demand – being essentially tough, dry cruising boats with easily driven lines and proven ocean-going abilities...” Strong words perhaps, but sisterships have proven all of this with their successful extended cruising. DICER’s current impressive condition results from recent refits under the ownership of an experienced yachting industry professional, leaving her ready and very well equipped for adventuring to warmer waters or simply local pottering. Wherever it is, the glance back from the tender will be one of love for her bold sheer, proud bow, purposeful appearance and cozy cabins.
