A partir d'un Samana 59 standard, les équipes de Fountaine Pajot et d'EODev ont mis au point et installé un groupe électro-hydrogène d'une puissance nominale de 70 kW. Avec l’appui de 42 m2 de panneaux solaires, ce générateur de 300 kg installé dans la cale arrière tribord alimente sans un bruit une batterie LiFePO4 (Lithium-Fer-Phosphate) de 64 kWh – comparable à celle qui équipe une berline électrique haut de gamme, elle pèse 350 kg. Les moteurs retenus offrent 50 kW chacun. Les 7,5 kg d'hydrogène sont stockés à 350 bars dans des réservoirs spécifiques en carbone – chaque tube ne pèsent que 30 kg ! L'autonomie électro-hydrogène est de 40 heures au mouillage et de 10 heures à une vitesse de 5 nœuds. Evidemment, l'énergie des panneaux solaires et surtout l'hydrogénération lors de la navigation sous voile sont en mesure d'augmenter considérablement ces valeurs "brutes". En cas de problème, un petit groupe électrogène et 700 litres de carburant sont embarqués. En usage standard, ce catamaran devrait être autonome et surtout zéro émissions pendant une semaine, ce qui correspond à peu près à la moitié de la possibilité du modèle standard, équipé de 2 moteurs de 110 CV, 2 générateurs de 15 kW et 1 400 litres de gazole. Précisons que le déplacement en charge du Samana 59 Smart Electric REXh2 n’est pas beaucoup plus élevé que celui du catamaran de série. Le grand catamaran a rejoint les Caraïbes où il est exploité en charter par Tradewinds ; c’est en effet Magnus Lewin, le directeur général de cette société spécialisée dans la location à la cabine sous forme d’abonnement, qui s'est porté acquéreur de ce Samana avant-gardiste. Ce système de propulsion est séduisant à bien des égards. Reste le problème de la recharge en hydrogène : pour l’heure, aucune structure n’existe dans les ports. Mais les loueurs les plus investis dans la cause environnementale comme Tradewinds mais également Dream Yacht Worldwide – qui vient de commander une dizaine de catamarans électriques Fountaine Pajot – pourraient bien être les précurseurs et installer des stations de recharges, à l’image des bornes de recharge Tesla.
