E' normalmente costruita con una tela fissata su una armatura di metallo alla quale è attaccata una cima che la collega all'imbarcazione. Tale attrezzo posto in mare trova nell'acqua una resistenza tale da contrastare il movimento di scarroccio generato dal vento. Viene chiamata anche ancora di cappa.
