Welcome to Kalos! We encountered two Orcas as we sailed with one dog and 5 crew 900 nautical miles down the coast of Baja California over an 18 day period. Tisha spotted the black dorsal fin and we all were in disbelief as the first one was swimming upside down right towards our port beam only to submerge at the last second just missing our keel. The second one split off and went for our rudder but luckily they both left us alone after this brief but frightening yet amazing experience! Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well?
