The art of the pre-start cross is a crucial aspect of sailing and yachting, particularly in competitive events like the Narrows Regatta 2026. In this video, we'll be focusing on the techniques and strategies involved in executing a successful pre-start cross, using our sailboat, a sigma 33 yacht, as an example. We'll be sailing on Strangford Lough, a popular spot for sailing and boating, and will be showcasing the skills required to navigate the waters and get ahead of the competition. The pre-start cross is a complex maneuver that requires a deep understanding of sailing principles, including how to sail and yacht handling, as well as knowledge of irc racing rules. Our team, Bottom Up Boats, will be sharing their expertise and experience, gained from participating in numerous sailing races, including the Narrows Regatta, to provide valuable insights and tips on how to improve your sailing skills. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just starting out, this video will provide you with a unique perspective on the art of the pre-start cross, and will be a great addition to your sailing vlog collection. So if you're interested in learning more about sailboat racing, yacht sailing, and the Strangford Lough sailing scene, then this video is for you. We'll be covering topics such as how to sail a j109 sailboat, sigma 33 sailing techniques, and the importance of boat life and sailing etiquette. By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of the pre-start cross and how to apply it to your own sailing experiences. The team at bottom up boats hope you are enjoying our short clips from the 2026 racing season.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS - Freediving The first stop for prevention is knowing your own limits. So if you've been in the water for a long time and two things happen, one, the confidence builds like the dives start to feel easier, towards the end of the session, so it feels easier to go deeper, to equalise, you feel more relaxed and everything and the second thing is that your actual capacity goes down. You're more confident but less capable, the longer that you stay non the water. When we're breathing, between dives, we're eliminating more carbon dioxide than we are replacing during the actual dives. We become Hypocapnic. Low, hypo, canonic, carbon dioxide. There's too little CO2 in the body. You might think, that doesn't make sense CO2's a waste product of course we need to get rid of it, but you do need a baseline level of CO2 in the body in order to stimulate the dive reflex.
