We dive into a deep, hidden lagoon on the edge of a remote reef, where schools of surgeonfish and parrotfish surge past like a living river over dramatic drop-offs and coral canyons. Winding through underwater tunnels beneath ancient limestone, we chase the mystery of what waits around each corner. You just met "The One Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken" in a Bangkok park. Seeing a 2-meter Asian Water Monitor (known scientifically as Varanus salvator) just 1 meter away is a true Jurassic Park moment in the middle of the urban jungle. But in Thailand, this giant reptile is more than just wildlife — it's a living superstition. Locals call them "Hia," a word so heavy with bad luck it's used as a forbidden insult. To protect the local culture and bring fortune, we use the nickname "Tua Ngern Tua Thong" (Silver and Gold). But as a culinary anthropologist, I have to give you a warning: despite their calm look, these are apex predators. This protected species is vital to the Bangkok ecosystem, but they are dangerous. ⚠️ WHY YOU MUST STAY AWAY: The Bite: A toxic cocktail of bacteria and mild venomous enzymes. The Tail: A powerful whip that protects their territory. The Speed: They rule both land and water with lightning reflexes. They are beautiful to observe from a safe distance, but never forget: you are in THEIR territory. 🇹🇭 Would you dare to stand this close to a real-life dragon? Tell me in the comments! 👇
77 days. That's how long I have until the start of the Golden Globe Race. Sounds like plenty of time. Except right now the boat is out of the water, there is no mast on it, parts are arriving from different places, and somehow the to-do list keeps finding new ways to grow instead of shrink. Every time I cross something off, three new things appear. It's exciting. It's stressful. It's probably exactly where I'm supposed to be. The funny thing is that when people think about the start of the race, they picture the boats leaving the harbor. What they don't see are the months before it. The planning. The repairs. The deadlines. The last-minute surprises. The clock is ticking. The start line is getting closer. And somehow, whether I feel ready or not, September keeps coming 🌊 77 days to go.
