Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well? The crew on J109 Going to Red had some close tussles with J109 Ctrl-J during Cork Week 2024. For the most part Going to Red was faster upwind with Ctrl-J making up ground on the runs. GTR was doing all it could to slip down to leeward to stay in front of the fast charging blue spinnaker.
