bracciare: (v.) (Conduzione) to brace Far ruotare orizzontalmente i pennoni attorno ai rispettivi punti di unione con l'albero per cambiare l'orientazione delle vele quadre nei velieri antichi. Tale manovra consentiva di disporre le vele nel modo più opportuno rispetto alla direzione del vento e alla rotta da seguire. Es. "bracciare in croce" significava porre i pennoni a 90° per prendere il vento da poppa; "bracciare di punta" significava porre i pennoni con l'angolo minimo per poter stringere il vento. Nelle imbarcazioni moderne indica la manovra di recuperare (cazzare) il braccio dello spinnaker per "quadrare" il tangone, cioè allontanarne la varea dalla prua e permettere allo spinnaker stesso di portare con il vento più spostato verso poppa. braccio: (s.m.) [A]. (Carteggio) fathom Misura inglese di profondità corrispondente a 1,85 metri e si suddivide in 6 piedi. Ancora oggi le carte nautiche e le pubblicazioni dell'Ammiragliato Inglese riportano le profondità in questa unità di misura. [B]. b. dello spinnaker (Cavi e nodi) guy Cima di notevole lunghezza che permette di regolare la posizione della varea del tangone. Tale cima è fissata (comunemente con un moschettone) ad un angolo dello spinnaker, passa per la varea libera del tangone e, tramite bozzelli vari, viene rimandata ad un verricello in coperta. Le manovre del braccio sono: bracciare (recuperare per allontanare la varea dalla prua e "quadrare" il tangone e lo spinnaker di conseguenza) o lascare (rilasciare per avvicinare la varea alla prua e quindi "strallare" il tangone e lo spinnaker). Dopo una virata di poppa ("strambata") nelle imbarcazioni di piccola dimensione il braccio diventa "scotta" e la scotta diventa braccio entrando in trazione dopo la manovra di virata. Nelle imbarcazioni più grandi, a causa della elevata forza che lo spinnaker esercita sulle due cime, non si effettua tale scambio e si preferisce armare due bracci e due scotte (uno per ogni bordo) in modo da utilizzare il braccio sopravvento (e la scotta sottovento) mentre l'altra coppia rimane a riposo. Dopo una virata di poppa il braccio precedentemente a riposo viene messo in trazione mentre l'altro rimane a riposo fino alla prossima virata (idem per le scotte). brancarella: (s.f.) (Cavi e nodi) cringle, reef-cringle Occhiello di cavo cucito saldamente alla vela (normalmente ai bordi o in corrispondenza di adeguati rinforzi) utilizzati per passarvi o legarvi cime di vario tipo (es. borose, bozzelli, etc.).
