A dramatic opening day of Gold fleet racing saw Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove Team Dickson Waddilove 49er Ireland hold on to their third overall place in their quest to qualify Ireland for Tokyo 2021 with a third place followed by an impressive race win. In a repeat of Tuesday’s form, the pair were heading for a third top three result but were again disqualified for being fractionally over the line at the start. Ireland remains under threat from Italian boats in 12th, 15th and 16th places while Belgium hold 14th place. Thursdays’ Gold fleet series again features three races each day before a single fleet race on Friday to decide the top ten boats for the medal race final. “Gold fleet racing is full of swings and roundabouts and nothing can be taken as assured until the final race ends,” commented James O’Callaghan, Irish Sailing’s Performance Director. “As predicted at the start of the week, this series is going to go down to the wire on Friday.”

Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, navegador português, em 1606 foi o inventor da palavra Austrália e o primeiro europeu a chegar a Vanuatu, no Pacífico Sul. Dois feitos que se cruzam por acaso. Vanuatu, país independente desde 1980, antes chamado Novas Hébridas, foi visitado primeiramente pelo navegador português Pedro Fernandes de Queiroz em 1606, que ao chegar à ilha de Espírito Santo acreditou estar na Austrália, assim inventando o nome do maior país da Oceânia. Foi também ele o primeiro europeu a contactar com as tribos melanésias locais de #Vanuatu. Ao chegar à ilha vindo de oeste e sendo já esperada uma grande terra no hemisfério austral, antes descoberta pelo lado este e norte por expedições portuguesas, ele nomeou a ilha como Austrialia do Espírito Santo. Na época a dinastia filipina em Portugal e Espanha era dos Habsburgo, da Áustria, assim também homenageando a coroa vigente. Hoje em dia existem duas estátuas dele em Sydney e Camberra, e a maior ilha de Vanuatu é chamada Espiritu Santo, em sua homenagem. Vem conhecer este herói da história marítima mundial, estudado nas escolas de Vanuatu, e homenageado nas ruas da Austrália, mas tão pouco conhecido em Portugal.

Most cruisers practice abandoning ship, extinguishing fires, and handling medical emergencies, yet we are far more likely to face self-defense threats than those other situations. So Nicole and I also practice self-defense, building the skills and mindset we will be grateful to have if/when they are needed. In this scenario we deploy a Byrna Mission 4 rifle and Byrna EP pistol against an unwelcome “intruder”, an aggressive “dog,” and stationary “threats” at various distances and directions. We start with the rifle and pistol stowed, incorporating movement, as well as quickly reloading both weapons. When I watch this, I notice a lot that I did “right” including- not muzzle sweeping Nicole, good pistol reload, mostly accurate shots, good verbal challenge, etc. There is a lot I can improve including- rifle was held too low during reload, I took too long to deploy pistol from waist pack, my stance was off balance with pistol, etc. What do you notice I did well?
