We are Ziggy and Nat, a couple who not so long ago knew nothing about sailing. Fast forward few years and we are proud to say we know a thing or two about sailing, we bought a boat and now we are refitting that boat with a plan to leave the life we know behind. The RYA Start Yachting was our first course. We loved it and wanted more. At that time we had no idea how big the community of boaters is. We met fantastic people on each and every course we did. For the first time since we moved to the UK we felt like we were part of something. The sailing community was welcoming, friendly and so inspiring. We found a lifestyle we knew we wanted for ourselves. We bought Squalo a 1981 Oyster 39”, the day after our Yachtmaster Offshore exam. She ticked so many boxes of things we wanted from a blue water cruiser. But she was neglected, and although we had no experience in boat refit, “surely, it can’t be that difficult.” we thought. So here we are. Putting blood, sweat and at times even tears into our yacht Squalo. Because not only she will be a vessel taking us to the most remote places on earth.. she will become our floating home for many years to come. We are documenting our experiences during the refit and sharing this journey with others. When Liz and I sailed to Kazikli we had dinner at one of the two local restaurants. This one allowed us to take dinner on a floating raft where we were able to pull ourselves along a cable out to 'sea'! When we needed table service, however, a little local lad had to jump in his oversize dinghy and row the second bottle of red over to us! Classic!
Another concern for people is police. I haven't many issues with police the entire time I've lived or visited Mexico. My biggest tips: 🗣️ It does help to know Spanish. If you plan on visiting Mexico, take some time to learn. It's not only helpful in sticky situations but also unlocks more experiences of the culture and people, which is the whole point of travel. 👮♀️ Follow the laws. Don't speed or drive like an turd. 🚨 If you do get pulled over, do whatever you can to not bribe the police. Foreigners opting to pay cash directly to police is why people continue to have problems with them. If you get pulled over, ask for an official multa (ticket) and to go to the station to pay it directly. This takes more time, but sometimes insisting on not giving the police officer petty cash will make them drop the issue all together. Finally, don't let the news scare you. Are there certain parts of Mexico that are dangerous? Yes, of course, just like any other country, but Baja is pretty well protected as a tourism hot spot.
