We are Ziggy and Nat, a couple who not so long ago knew nothing about sailing. Fast forward few years and we are proud to say we know a thing or two about sailing, we bought a boat and now we are refitting that boat with a plan to leave the life we know behind. The RYA Start Yachting was our first course. We loved it and wanted more. At that time we had no idea how big the community of boaters is. We met fantastic people on each and every course we did. For the first time since we moved to the UK we felt like we were part of something. The sailing community was welcoming, friendly and so inspiring. We found a lifestyle we knew we wanted for ourselves. We bought Squalo a 1981 Oyster 39”, the day after our Yachtmaster Offshore exam. She ticked so many boxes of things we wanted from a blue water cruiser. But she was neglected, and although we had no experience in boat refit, “surely, it can’t be that difficult.” we thought. So here we are. Putting blood, sweat and at times even tears into our yacht Squalo. Because not only she will be a vessel taking us to the most remote places on earth.. she will become our floating home for many years to come. We are documenting our experiences during the refit and sharing this journey with others. On the other hand, the atmosphere both on and off the water has never been better. The trade winds, in fine form at between 20 and 25 knots, undoubtedly had something to do with it... The five entrants in CSA 1 enjoyed superb courses towards Saba, Saint-Barts and Anguilla. The HH66 Lee Overlay Partners (ex Nemo) put on a great show, impressively flying a hull and, above all, peak speeds pushing 30 knots. The Gunboat 72 Layla was not to be outdone, with her GPS recording a top speed of 24.5 knots. The La Grande-Motte shipyard's first flybridge catamaran won the overall race on corrected time. The Diam 24 fleet was of course severely tested by the choppy conditions, but there too, they put on quite a show. In this fury of spray and exciting runs, the crew of Anomaly came out on top, leaving their rivals with no chance of a rematch. For the past two years, the CMC has been running a second division called Rally. This year, the 9 participants were accompanied - and looked after - by our Marketing Director Gwen Dorning.
