VHF (Very High Frequency) radio is line-of-sight because its short wavelengths travel in straight paths and cannot follow the curve of the Earth or pass through solid physical blocks. VHF frequencies range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz, meaning their wavelengths are relatively short (about 1 to 10 meters). Unlike low-frequency radio waves, short waves do not bounce off the ionosphere or easily diffract around large obstacles. Because the signal is blocked by the curvature of the Earth, raising your antenna height dramatically increases your transmission range. #radio #sailing #sailingschool #sailboat

The island of Carriacou is north of Grenada in the southern Caribbean. Many sailing cruisers make the Grenadines home during the hurricane season as it's low risk. Our favorite anchorage is Sandy Island or just off Paradise Beach.
