For centuries sailors have navigated their way across the oceans by celestial navigation or nautical astronomy - using a sextant with the sun, moon, planets, and stars. For the modern sailor, it is essential when crossing oceans as back up to the modern and much relied upon electronic navigation. If you are curious about how to use a sextant or have taken the RYA Yachtmaster or Ocean Theory courses, or are even self-taught, our celestial sailing weekends are ideal offering both an introduction and a refresher. All are welcome. A big advantage is that you learn in a small group, under the supervision of an expert instructor. The weekends involve sailing along the south side of the Isle of Wight and back up through the Needles. A beautiful area to sail whilst offering ample opportunity to practice using the sextant. Quick funny little bit from just before I jumped into the water. These couple of Bull Sharks were great to swim with later. I just had fun dunking the camera into the water and watching them swim crazy fast after it. Now normally sharks in the Bahamas and elsewhere in the world don't behave like this. Usually they are much more skittish. But I was at a known shark feeding site called "Tiger Beach". As well, they were only attracted to small items that could be food being thrown overboard.
