Check out our latest video for the full story! In this week's video we share how we danced a sailing tango with the Mistral and went back and forth to try to get somewhere, anywhere at all on our Outremer 52 sailing catamaran. We get rain and 42 knot winds and visit lovely Port Grimaud and Saint-Tropez. ⚓ Join us as we learn what it takes to circumnavigate successfully and make the transition to liveaboard cruising. 🆓Our sailing channel is currently AD-FREE but there are other ways you can support our Outremer 52 project. 👍🏻 Like, subscribe, share our YouTube videos or check out our blog, podcast or social pages below ⭐️Check out our new catamaran sailing blog! https://sailingawen.com 🎧COVERTCASTAWAY PODCAST anywhere you listen or stream directly at https://sailingawen.com/podcast INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/sailingawen/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/SailingAwen/ FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sailingawen/ 📧EMAIL US: sailingawen@gmail.com 🌎TRACK US at https://www.polarsteps.com/SailingAwen ⛵️AWEN will be featured at the MIAMI BOAT SHOW! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷 We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel. UPDATE 9/11/18 - just in from Boris Best from the upwind bouncing bam bam bam. All good here so far.Liebe grüße Tech talk: I had broken a lashing between the mast and the block for the mast rotation purchase. I left the mast rotation loose as upwind it aligns itself usually pretty nicely. This morning around 4 the boat was suddenly starting to act weirdly. I checked the wind angle display but i was upwind, although the boat was jumping over the waves and reaching at 2 knots. Heeled over a lot. I felt quickly that it was wrong with the wind instruments. I switched on the B system and find out that was broken. No surprise that the wind vane on the top of the mast was damaged after all the slamming. My heart beat rises imagining sailing the rest of the race with no instruments like in the TJV. It means a big penalty in performance. To figure out what was going on i swapped over some elements and could find that on my main system only the mast angle sensor had broken, possibly as a consequence of leaving the mast rotation open. I repaired the lashing, adjusted the mast to this upwind angle and gave the instruments a manuel input for mast angle instead of the sensor. That way my A system is now fully up and giving nice wind data again. A small issue but in the darkness and upwind - slamming is quite annoying. So happy now that i still have one functional wind vane at the top of the mast and can sail with autopilot following the wind angle… that helps a lot!
