Namba, with its lively Dotonbori area, is one of Osaka's busiest areas. It is filled with visitors from around the world. But places like this only work because of the people who belong here, the cooks, shopkeepers, and workers who show up every day. Visitors pass through. Community stays. A field note from Japan. Lowell Sheppard is a writer, sailor, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society exploring what Japan can teach us about longevity, community, and living well in an aging world. He is the author of the forthcoming book Longevity and the Art of Community: Lessons from Japan. We visited Dartmoor Zoo - the real life inspiration for the film "We Bought A Zoo"! It is a wonderful Zoo with a whole host of animals that you don't normally get to see. Their conservation programme is excellent, and the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. Dartmoor zoo is definitely worth a visit if you are in Devon! subscribe for more Devon content, and let us know in the comments where you would like us to visit next! #shorts

After what feels like weeks of waiting, we are finally putting some miles under the keel again. We're on our way to Guna Yala (the San Blas islands), sailing upwind along the North coast of Panama. We haven't done a great deal of upwind sailing on this voyage so far, but that's about to change - Antigua is 1000 miles directly upwind, and the Caribbean trade winds are strong, squally, and often bring big seas. Today is good practice for us, beating into a relatively comfortable 15 - 18 knots with moderate seas, 2 reefs in, 5 - 6 kn boat speed, and ironing out all sorts of little issues that come up.
