After two months away visiting family in Canada, we finally return to our sailboat in Luperón, Dominican Republic. Leaving your boat unattended in the tropics is always a gamble, so we were relieved to find her looking surprisingly good when we arrived back. Of course, boat life means there’s always something to do. We start the process of bringing the boat back to life with a good clean and a few projects. One of the bigger ones in this episode is transforming our worn countertop by sanding it down and creating a beach-inspired epoxy finish. Coral and Kai are entertaining each others a lot more which makes it all easier. But life in Luperón isn’t just about boat work. This cruiser town has a unique community vibe. We enjoy local restaurants, movie nights with other sailors, and shopping for fresh local food around town. It feels good to be back aboard and settling into Caribbean cruising life again. After months in the Caribbean, we head back to Canada for some much-needed family time and a full taste of fall and winter. Our trip starts in La Beauce, where we spend time with Mamie surrounded by incredible fall colours. The kids soak up the crisp autumn air while we enjoy quiet family moments before winter arrives. Next we drive toward the Gatineau region to visit Nana. Along the way we explore beautiful hiking trails and make a stop at the incredible Parc Omega, where you can drive through the park safari-style and see animals up close from the car. Watching the wildlife wander right up to us was an unforgettable experience which Coral and Kai absolutely loved. But the biggest moment comes when winter finally arrives in La Beauce. At just two years old, Kai experiences snow for the very first time, true boat kid. From sledding and snow angels to riding a Ski-Doo and warming up around a campfire in the snow, it’s the full Canadian winter experience. Before leaving the Dominican Republic for two months, we squeezed in one last adventure. We visited a local farm owned by friends where the kids roamed free, petted cows and bulls, and even rode horses — the kind of simple, wild childhood moments we love about this life. Back on the sailboat, it was time for the not-so-glamorous side of cruising: prepping the boat to sit safely on a mooring ball while we fly back to Canada to visit family. Lines doubled, systems shut down, everything secured. One final beach day at Playa Grande… and then the long travel marathon begins: dinghy ride, taxi, two flights with a 2 and 3 year old, and one last car ride to Grandma’s house in Quebec. In less than 24 hours we go from Caribbean heat to crisp fall air, vibrant autumn colours, and apple picking with family. We packed up in Luperón and hit the road for the mountains of Jarabacoa— trading ocean breezes for cool air and jungle-covered peaks. After a scenic drive through the Dominican countryside, we rented a house in Las Guázaras, perfectly tucked into the hills. From there, the adventure really began. With our 2 and 3 year old in tow, we tackled the steep and strenuous hike up Montaña El Mogote. It wasn’t easy — sharp climbs, and lots of toddler encouragement — but the panoramic views made every step worth it. We cooled off at Balneario Salto El Baiguate, absolutely stunning. A powerful waterfall, fresh mountain water, and that feeling of having a place almost entirely to ourselves. We also explored the town of Jarabacoa, wandered through Parque La Confluencia, and crossed the suspended bridge over the mighty Río Yaque del Norte — the longest river in the Dominican Republic. Mountains, waterfalls, family adventures, and unforgettable views — this is why Jarabacoa is known as the adventure capital of the DR. Filmed August 2025. Life at anchor outside Luperón Harbour isn’t always calm… We’re making water with our watermaker, tackling boat projects (with Coral and Kai actually helping this time!), and enjoying cruiser life — from the New Amsterdam cruisers show to the kids playing in the central parque. We spend extra money to make sure our mooring ball is extra solid for hurricane season. Then Hurricane Erin, a Category 5 storm, passes nearby… and just when we think we’re in the clear, we’re jolted awake by sirens in the middle of the night. A smooth sail across the Turks and Caicos Bank quickly turns sporty as a squall hits while exiting the bank, we drop anchor at remote Big Sand Cay 🌊⛵️ The next day, we sail up to Cockburn Town on Grand Turk to officially check out of the country. This passage tested us. We set sail from Mayaguana, Bahamas to West Caicos and quickly found ourselves in a rough, uncomfortable sail—things flying, gear tossed around, and water making its way inside the boat. Not exactly the dream crossing… but all part of life at sea. After finally arriving in West Caicos, we continued on to Sapodilla Bay, Providenciales, where calm waters and turquoise blues were a welcome change. Plus an easy, straightforward check-in to Turks & Caicos, anchoring off a busy but beautiful tourist beach with restaurants just steps from the water, and a scooter run to a well-stocked grocery store with surprisingly good prices. Sometimes cruising isn’t turquoise water and postcard sunsets. The sail to Mayaguana tested us. A long, exhausting passage, followed by an even longer wait in a very rolly anchorage—with little sleep and plenty of second-guessing. These are the moments no one really talks about… the ones where you wonder why you chose life on a sailboat. But as always, the hard days come with unexpected rewards. We met locals, made new friends and enjoyed some seriously good Bahamian food. And slowly, the stress faded—replaced by the reminder that this lifestyle is about more than perfect conditions. Crooked Island was far from boring. We make the most of our short stay on this quiet island by exploring the abandoned Bird Rock Lighthouse. A hop in the crystal clear water has our 3 year old daughter snorkeling non-stop to spot lobsters and fish. But the charm of Landrail Point Settlement comes from its people. Kind and generous they offer us rides and help us in any which way they can. Plus to my (Alex) excitement I get to finally buy fresh fruits and vegetables after 2 months away from a grocery store. We kicked off 2025 in Florida in the US. In February we sailed over to the Bahamas and made our way South. In June we crossed over to Turks and Caicos Islands. Late June we finally sailed to the Dominican Republic for Hurricane season. End of September we flew to Canada to visit family and enjoy the snow. And late November we flew back to our sailboat in the Dominican Republic. Life couldn't be any better in the Jumentos, Bahamas. Lots of snorkeling, spearfishing, beach time, and even wing foiling. Johnson Cay, Raccoon Cay, Jamaica Cay, Flamingo Cay and Water Cay are must sail to islands. There are just so many incredible things to see.
