Sometimes the best cruising stops are the ones you never planned! ⛵🌴 We sail out of Portsmouth, Dominica, hoping to make a quick hop around the coast and drop anchor just around the corner. But our anchoring plans don’t exactly go as expected… That little failure leads us to Coulibistrie, an unexpected hidden gem on Dominica’s wild west coast. We head ashore and are immediately welcomed by some of the friendliest locals we’ve met. Then we follow the river inland, surrounded by towering green mountains and a breathtaking canyon-like landscape. It’s raw, lush, peaceful and exactly the kind of place that makes us love exploring Dominica by sailboat. We set out to explore Dominica’s famous Indian River… but somehow managed to lose the trail! What followed turned into one of those adventures that makes Dominica so incredible. We wandered through thick jungle, crossed the river and found ourselves surrounded by huge twisted roots that looked straight out of a movie set — which makes sense, because parts of Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed along the Indian River! Eventually, we found our way to the legendary Bush Bar hidden deep along the river. 🍹🌿 What an amazing place! Back at the sailboat, the adventure wasn’t over. We jumped straight into the water for a snorkel and couldn’t believe how much marine life was hiding right beneath us — including TONS of lionfish. Jungle trails, Pirates of the Caribbean scenery, river crossings and incredible snorkeling… Dominica keeps surprising us. We say goodbye to Guadeloupe and set sail for Dominica, but it definitely isn't the smooth Caribbean sail we were hoping for! The day starts with a bad feeling in my gut before we head out into a rough, lumpy sea for the crossing to Dominica. 🌧️⛵ It isn't our most comfortable passage, but eventually the dramatic green mountains of the Nature Island appear ahead. Checking into Dominica turns out to be surprisingly easy, and we're finally free to start exploring but the rain won't stop! Our first adventure takes us to a beautiful beach where we discover a shipwreck along the shore. Then we decide to try something different and jump aboard the local bus to explore farther… except things don't exactly go according to plan. 😂 That's cruising life — rough sails, unexpected discoveries and plans that seem to change by the hour! Sailing Guadeloupe with the family ⛵ Another beautiful stretch of Caribbean cruising! We start out anchored in Malendure, where it’s time to tackle one of the less glamorous parts of boat life — the grocery run! With the boat stocked up, we jump into the clear Caribbean water for another incredible snorkel before raising the sails and heading back north along Guadeloupe’s spectacular coastline. Our destination is Deshaies, one of our favorite little towns in Guadeloupe, where we meet back up with SV Camino a buddy boat and get to enjoy cruising with friends again. Of course, we can’t stay out of the water for long! There’s more snorkeling in Anse Leroux, and family fun before we head out on a hike to Anse à Sable. Hidden along the coast, we go back to the natural hot springs right beside the sea — the perfect ending to another day of exploring Guadeloupe. Our 4-year-old Coral is taking her underwater adventures to a whole new level! 🤿🌊 We explore the incredible Réserve Cousteau in Guadeloupe, where the water is crystal clear, the reef is full of life, and Coral starts diving below the surface all on her own. Watching her confidence grow underwater at only four years old was pretty amazing! But our peaceful Caribbean adventure doesn't stay peaceful for long. The swell rolls in and our anchorage becomes so uncomfortable that we decide it's time to move. We head to nearby Anse à Sable, where we stumble across something we weren't expecting — a natural hot spring right beside the sea! ♨️🌴 It turns into the perfect place for the kids to play while we relax and enjoy a glass of wine. One last adventure at Grande Anse, one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve found in Guadeloupe before making the short hop to Deshaies. There we enjoy some delicious local treats and cool off with a swim in the river. Then it’s time to keep sailing south along the coast of Guadeloupe. The conditions are SO mellow that Cory actually says, “Pour yourself a nice glass of wine—it’s so mellow!” 🍷⛵ Well… that aged quickly. 😂 The wind goes from just 7 knots to 33 KNOTS, the boat is heeling hard, and our relaxing little sail suddenly gets a whole lot more exciting! Eventually we make it to Malendure, where we drop anchor in front of a beautiful volcanic black-sand beach. Anse Leroux, Guadeloupe is perfect, with crystal-clear water, a close by beach and fantastic snorkeling just a short ride from the boat. From there, we take a long dinghy ride to the colorful village of Deshaies, where we wander the charming streets and discover an amazing local bakery serving delicious French pastries and fresh baguettes at prices we couldn't believe. Next, it's time to sail north to Grande Anse, and wow... this beach completely exceeds our expectations. Stretching for over a kilometer with soft golden sand, swaying palm trees, and hardly another soul around, it's easily one of the most beautiful beaches we've visited in the Caribbean. The kids spend hours jumping through the waves, we crack open fresh coconuts under the palms, and quickly learn just how scorching the black-and-gold sand becomes in the tropical sun! Before heading back, we hike to an old cannon overlooking the bay for one final spectacular view. Leaving Saba was one of the hardest departures yet. It quickly became one of our favorite islands in the Caribbean, but the weather had other plans. With stronger winds on the way, it was time to keep heading south. Our original plan was to spend a few days exploring St. Kitts and Nevis, but the anchorage was far too rolly to stay. Instead we just did a short overnight stop in Nevis. The next morning we sailed to the spectacular volcanic island of Montserrat, but by the time we arrived it was too late to check in—and with weekend overtime fees, we made the tough decision to keep sailing. After nearly three days at sea, hopping from island to island without really stopping, we finally arrived in Guadeloupe, exhausted but excited to step back onto solid ground. Saba completely stole our hearts, and saying goodbye wasn't easy. 🌋❤️ Before setting sail, we squeezed every last adventure out of what has become our favorite island in the Caribbean. Our final day starts with one last spectacular hike from The Bottom to Windwardside via the beautiful Crispeen Trail and Mas Cohones Trail. The lush jungle, towering trees, and peaceful mountain scenery make this one of the most rewarding hikes on the island. Even though the kids were running out of energy, the breathtaking views from Mas Cohones Hill made every step worth it. To celebrate an unforgettable stay, we stop at the hidden Colibri Café, tucked away in a tropical botanical garden. With local Saba beer, delicious smoothies, and two playgrounds for the kids, it was the perfect way to end our time ashore. But one adventure remained... We jumped into the dinghy for one last trip around Saba's dramatic north coast. Towering volcanic cliffs, rugged coastline, and crystal-clear Caribbean water gave us a final reminder of why this tiny island is unlike anywhere else we've visited. Saba may be small, but it left us with some of our biggest memories. We already can't wait to come back. Saba completely blew us away. 🤯 After waiting for the perfect weather window, we finally sailed to one of the least-visited islands in the Caribbean—and it instantly became one of our favorites. Towering straight out of the sea, Saba looks more like something from Jurassic World than the Caribbean. Steep volcanic cliffs, lush green mountains, tiny villages perched on impossible slopes, and almost no beaches make this island unlike anywhere we've sailed before. Our adventure starts beneath the water as we snorkel around one of Saba's famous pinnacles. Crystal-clear water, healthy coral reefs, colorful tropical fish, and abundant marine life make it one of the most unique snorkeling spots we've experienced. Next comes the adventure ashore. With no easy beach landing, we anchor the dinghy offshore and swim to land before making our way along the rugged coastline to reach The Ladder—the historic stone staircase that was once Saba's only connection to the outside world. Between dramatic cliffs, loose rocks tumbling from above, incredible ocean views, and a passing rain shower, it's an unforgettable hike. The adventure continues with a ride to The Bottom, Saba's charming capital, where we hike the beautiful Parish Hill Trail. The trail winds through lush jungle and open grassy ridges, rewarding us with panoramic views over the island's iconic red rooftops and even the cloud-covered summit of Mount Scenery. After finally finding the perfect weather window, we arrive in spectacular Saba and check in by sailboat to one of the most unique islands in the Caribbean. Our adventure begins with a ride along the legendary "Road That Couldn't Be Built"—an engineering marvel carved into impossibly steep volcanic mountainsides. Many believed construction was impossible, yet today it connects the island's colorful villages with breathtaking views around every corner. Then comes our biggest challenge yet: hiking Mount Scenery, Saba's dormant volcano and the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Together with our 2 and 4-year-old, we tackle all 1,064 steps through an incredible journey of changing ecosystems. Along the trail, we discover delicious wild wine berries, wander beneath towering rainforest canopies, enter mysterious elfin forests, and finally emerge into a magical cloud forest hidden among the mist. Lunch at the summit, surrounded by clouds, is a moment we'll never forget. Saba truly lives up to its nickname: The Island in the Clouds. Life in Saint Martin is looking much brighter this week! 🌴⛵ After a rough stretch of boat problems and setbacks, we're finally enjoying island life again. Coral is having the time of her life jumping off the sailboat into the crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and we experience the vibrant atmosphere of Les Mardis de Grand Case with colorful costumes, music, dancing, and incredible local culture. Not everything goes according to plan though! What starts as a simple hiking adventure quickly turns into a disaster when we can't find the trail, get attacked by paper wasps, and end up dealing with a painfully swollen foot. Back aboard, we finally receive the long-awaited part for our watermaker. Will it finally solve our freshwater problems? After exploring beautiful St. John in the US Virgin Islands, it's time to check out of Cruz Bay and set sail for a long overnight passage to the island of Saint Martin! The crossing keeps us busy as the fishing lines come alive and we land multiple tuna along the way. After arriving in Marigot on the French side of the island, we're quickly reminded why so many cruisers love Saint Martin. Fresh baguettes from the bakery, affordable wine and cheese, waterfront happy hours, and a relaxed European atmosphere make it feel completely different from anywhere else in the Caribbean. We climb up to historic Fort Louis for an unforgettable sunset overlooking the bay, join the floating boat party known as Floatchella, and make a provisioning run to the Dutch side of the island where we discover one of the best-stocked grocery stores we've seen in the Caribbean. This week aboard SV Wildly Intrepid we continue exploring the stunning island of Saint John! We sail from beautiful Waterlemon Bay to the world famous Trunk Bay with its crystal clear turquoise water and perfect white sand beach. A tropical rain shower clears the crowds and leaves us almost alone in paradise before we head to Cinnamon Bay for more beach adventures… and even run into a wild donkey! By evening we anchor in stunning Maho Bay where the adventures keep coming. We hike up to the incredible America Hill Great House Ruins, explore the Maria Hope Trail, paddleboard, wingfoil, and watch Coral and Kai become real little hikers. To finish it all off, we sail into Cruz Bay to celebrate Cory’s birthday with ice cream at Mongoose Junction, painkillers at The Beach Bar, burgers and fries, and birthday cake back onboard SV Wildly Intrepid. This week aboard SV Wildly Intrepid we explore what might be the most beautiful island we’ve visited all season… 🌴🇻🇮 Sailing the US Virgin Islands with our buddy boat, we explore St John Island and hike the incredible trail from Francis Bay while discovering the crystal clear waters of Francis Bay and Maho Beach. Then we sail over to Waterlemon Bay for snorkeling around Waterlemon Cay — but the water was WAY colder than expected! To warm up we head ashore to explore the historic Annaberg Plantation ruins and learn about the island’s powerful and heartbreaking past. We finish the adventure with a hike up to the Windy Hill Great House ruins where the panoramic views over the US and British Virgin Islands absolutely blew us away. 🌴 Island hopping through the USVI brought us from the busy streets of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas to the wild beauty of St. John… and what an adventure it turned into. We wandered the steep chaotic roads of Charlotte Amalie (definitely not the most pedestrian-friendly place 😅), got rescued with a ride from a local, and made our way up to the incredible views at Drake’s Seat with turquoise bays below and the viewpoint of the town. After more exploring through town, we cooled off with pool time and drinks overlooking the harbour near the legendary Blackbeard's Castle — pirate vibes included. 🏴‍☠️ Then it was time to sail over to Saint John and the contrast was unreal. Less cruise ships and traffic… more mountains, wilderness, beaches and untouched Caribbean beauty. Our sail from Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Islands started off absolutely perfect… warm winds, beautiful seas, and another unforgettable Caribbean passage aboard SV Wildly Intrepid. But once we arrived in St. Thomas, things got interesting fast. We explored the abandoned tunnels of Fort Segarra on Water Island, tucked deep inside a hidden military bunker overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Then we escaped strong easterly winds in the crowded anchorage of Christmas Cove before sailing into the heart of Charlotte Amalie — one of the most historic and pirate-filled towns in the Caribbean. From riding local dollar safari buses to climbing up to Blackbeard’s Castle for incredible harbour views, this island had so much character. But one hike turned into a total disaster when we ended up bushwhacking through sharp thorns in the blazing heat… definitely not the adventure we planned.
