It’s time to start cracking into the list of jobs that brought us back into civilisation. We’ve just arrived in Hobart, after tackling the west and south coasts. We were trying hard to get here for summer, but as we missed it, arriving closer to winter. It was getting cold, and things were beginning to break at an increasing rate. Urging us to call it quits and give into the alluring comforts the marina offers during these harsh winter months. Enjoying the episodes? Some escape winter, we’ve just sailed straight into it. Use code SLIM to get 15% off your Simify eSIM here: https://simify.com/SLIM?c=1 We’ve just arrived in Australia’s coldest city, Hobart, Tasmania. Snow, ice, it’s foreign to us while aboard our 34-foot sailboat. Maybe that's exactly what makes spending winter here such an exciting part of our sailing journey. As the weather turns colder and conditions grow harsher, it’s time to secure the boat and settle into life attached to land. This is living on a boat through winter. Enjoying the episodes? You won’t believe what we’ve just lost. It’s the sign we needed to finally give in. We need a break. After arriving to Recherche Bay, we're on the move north through the D'entrecasteaux Channel, stopping along the way at Bruny Island. But when we find we’ve lost another crucial component, we've reached a point where we can't keep going anymore. We're calling it and sailing to Hobart, we need a break. Sail in the next Osaka Cup! We’re living aboard our sailboat amongst a rugged mountain range that spans to meet unimpeded ocean in the heart of the roaring forties. Check out Naming This Later's huge range of new designs & products https://namingthislater.com/discount/SLIMSOPH15 Don't forget to use our code SLIMSOPH15 for 15% off your order! The vast estuary of Port Davey is as large as three Sydney harbour's, yet it remains untamed and wild. Here, we’re at the end of Australia, and what an ending it is. There are no roads, no towns, no phone reception, and most of the time, no humans. This is boat life in the wilderness – deep in Tasmania’s southwest, halfway between the equator and south pole. Could you live in isolation for the rest of your life? Somewhere with no road access, no shops, no neighbours. Melaleuca in Port Davey is deep within Tasmania's wilderness. Australia's most southern state. Here, the weather is just as wild as the landscape; Southern Ocean winds, relentless rain, freezing winters, that turn this beautiful wilderness into a harsh and unforgiving place to survive. Yet one family chose to call it home. We’ve just sailed here aboard our 34-foot yacht. Enjoying the episodes? Becoming a Patron enables us to ensure the continuity of Slim & Soph - Sailing Nakama. We’re closing in on the final miles into absolute isolation. A Raw, untamed, roadless corner of Australia's southern pocket of wilderness. There’s no easy way here. We’re sailing in - Otherwise, it’s days of hiking over rugged ranges, or a costly landing on a hand-built dirt airstrip. This is Port Davey, Tasmania, where the roaring forties howl outside but inside this huge natural harbour, we’ll be sheltered and free to stay as long as our rations allow. Enjoying the episodes? We're the tiny boat amidst the battered west coast of Tasmania. Behind this rock is where we’ve found shelter, it takes the edge off the Southern Ocean swell. But, there’s no doubt, it’s remote and exposed. Boat life in the roaring forties is a new adventure for us, it's icy, yet exciting and we’re about to set off on a mission with a 2-day weather opportunity to get down this wild coast before the next blow rolls through. But it’s not unusual for us to want to stop somewhere a little off the beaten track.. Enjoying the episodes? Becoming a Patron enables us to ensure the continuity of Slim & Soph - Sailing Nakama. In the early 1980s, deep in Tasmania’s untouched wilderness, 1,200 ordinary people were arrested in a battle that divided the nation. We’ve just arrived at the Gordon River, a 172 km long river in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage listed area. Our goal is to head as far as we possibly can upstream to the Frankln River to find out why this protest against flooding the region was so important. Enjoying the episodes? We’re on a mission to reach a pocket of untamed wilderness in the 40-degree latitudes before winter closes in and the gaps between storms disappear. The west coast of Tasmania is one of the last surviving wildernesses on Earth—1.5 million hectares of national park, much of it World Heritage listed, and almost entirely inaccessible by road. It’s where dramatic mountain ranges collide with a wild coastline, hammered by relentless weather driven by the Roaring Forties. Enjoying the episodes? Piracy has always seemed like a distant reality, that is, until we found ourselves sailing into the pirate dense waters of Papua New Guinea & we've got to restock supplies! Merch re-stock! Check out our classic tees here 😊 https://slimandsophsailingnakama.com/ Enjoying the episodes? Becoming a Patron enables us to ensure the continuity of Slim & Soph - Sailing Nakama. A little goes a long way to keep this production alive. With very little free time between uni and the boat, Patreon enables us to focus on creating and posting videos rather than pouring beers at our local.
