After our sailing trip, I didn;t get back to Bala until late so I had to leave Lulu on her trailer. This week, with heavy rain and wind we get her back on her mooring. On my last day of the Menai Strait adventure, I sail my Drascombe Lugger to Fort Belan and back. Stopping in the windy bay by the fort to have lunch onboard. On the way I share everything i've learnt about cruising on the sea and on the way back, I realise that I just had my first solo sail on the sea! In the afternoon of day 2 we end up catching a lovely wind from Beaumaris and have a spectacular treat on the way to the Menai Suspension Bridge. The Menai Class Boats are out and racing so Lulu get's all her poles and sails flying and tries to race them. With the race behind us and a near miss with a moored boat, we knuckle back down to reality as we navigate the dreaded Swellies once again. This time we're at high water, going North to South and this time we're on our own!! From there we enjoy a lovely pleasent sail back to Dinorwic under Spinnaker which was a joy. After my first night sleeping onboard of Lulu, under my home made tent, day 2 of my 3 day trip sees us navigating the notorious "Swellies". For those who don't know these are the waters between the 2 Menai Bridges, which are well know for severe rapids and overfalls at the wrong time. We sail through South to North on this first encounter and I can;t tell you how nervous I am doing this. On the way we enjoy some of the sights of the Menai and after navigating through the Swellies we stop for a well earned Brunch at Cegin Harris Cafe, which has a superb brekky and lovely coffee! We sail on to Beaumaris and have a real treat on the way back, sailing amongst the MS Menai class boats. IN this part we sail from Port Dinorwice or Y Felineli for it's proper Welsh name and after a shaky start we enjoy an epic sail all the way down to the Abermenai anchorage. The best thing about this video is the new camera angle I got from my 360 Camera. I hope it adds to the video a little bit. With fairly light air, we go on a quick jaunt around the North end of Lake Bala in Lulu the Drascombe Lugger to see if she moves better with her new sails. The results are.....Well you'll just have to watch and see! Brimming with confidence though, we decide to dock up to the club jetty using only the Mainsail to power us in. I found this video hard to watch, and for all you wooden boat owners watching i'm sure this will be equally hard seeing a lovely little boat having open heart surgery!! Mochyn Du suffered a big blow over the winter. As the big strom came in, wind got under her and literally tore her from her anchor point in my wall. She then fell squre onto my railway sleeper wall leaving a huge amount of damage in her bow. At this point we still don;t know if she's repairable, but we're going to try. In this video we assess the damage and get all the damaged wood cut out. We then sand inside her to prep her for new wood panels. Today I received an exciting package that contained my 2 new sails for my Drascombe Lugger Lulu. Long overdue, having 3 new sails on the boat is going to definitely make her perform a lot better.
