Join Jude and Richard aboard Helios for a memorable Alicante city day before our season-closing sail to Cartagena – our winter berth in Spain. We wander the beautiful foreshore along the iconic Explanada de España — that wavy mosaic promenade lined with palm trees and offering stunning sea views. We stroll into the charming old town, stopping for a coffee and pastry, and duck under enormous shady trees when a quick shower passes through. Then we dive into the lively Mercado Central (Alicante Central Market), a 1920s treasure trove bursting with fresh seafood, local produce, cheeses, olives, pastries, and vibrant energy – perfect for grabbing provisions or soaking up authentic Spanish market life. We visit the elegant Concatedral de San Nicolás (Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas), a serene Renaissance masterpiece with its striking blue-tiled dome, peaceful cloister, and historic charm right in the heart of the old town. We finish with the easy lift up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara (just €2.70, 30-second ride from near Postiguet Beach) for incredible panoramic views over Alicante Bay, the city, and the Mediterranean – no steep hike needed, and the castle grounds are free to explore with ancient history dating back to the 9th century. A fun surprise: we stroll down the whimsical Calle de Las Setas (aka Mushroom Street or Calle San Francisco) – transformed in 2013 into a fairy-tale wonderland with giant colorful mushroom sculptures, toadstool "houses," yellow brick roads, and playful installations by artist Sergio Martinez. It's a quirky, photo-friendly spot that brings out the childlike joy amid the city bustle – a quick, delightful detour! The passage to Cartagena (~50–70 NM) was wonderfully calm – flat seas and sunshine meant mostly motor-sailing, giving us time to reflect. There's a touch of sadness wrapping up active Med cruising for a few months, but we're genuinely excited to settle into Cartagena: exploring its Roman amphitheater, historic port, local festivals, marina routine, boat tinkering, and deeper community vibes while recharging for what's next. Perfect for anyone eyeing Costa Blanca stops, Med wintering, or loving real couple vlogs with city gems, quirky finds, and honest sailing conditions (even the motory ones!). Join Jude and Richard from Sailing Helios for a full walkthrough of the brand-new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455 straight from the Düsseldorf Boat Show 2026! This 45-footer (LOA 14.28 m) is already one of the stars of the show — it had an incredibly strong debut with 8 boats sold on the floor alone. Jeanneau has nailed the perfect mix of performance sailing and liveaboard comfort, and we were seriously impressed by how cleverly they’ve used every single inch of space. In this episode, we show you everything we loved most: • The massive forward sail locker (sailors are calling it a true “monster” — easily one of the best in class) • The brand-new integrated workshop/storage area (our absolute favourite — it easily fits tools, spares, washer/dryer, extra fridge or even ventilated produce storage) • The bright, spacious interior that feels way bigger than 45 ft • Clever storage solutions everywhere, ergonomic cockpit, walkaround decks and a layout that’s perfect for short-handed cruising or family adventures Reviewers and visitors at the show are raving about it being “practical, user-friendly, ergonomic and one of the best cruising boats in its class” — with thoughtful design that makes real-world sailing and living aboard so much easier. We really like this boat — it just feels right. What do you think — would the new Sun Odyssey 455 make your shortlist? Escaping Storms at Empire State-Sized Calpe Rock – Sailing Denia to Alicante - Sailing Helios S03E46
In this Sailing Helios episode, we cast off from Denia as thunderstorms rumble along the coast – not ideal sailing weather! We push on and find excellent shelter from the forecast strong winds tucked beside the dramatic Penyal d'Ifac (Peñón de Ifach), the iconic limestone rock in Calpe that towers 332 meters (over 1,000 feet) – as tall as the Empire State Building and dominating the Costa Blanca skyline. After waiting out the bad weather for a day (and enjoying the stunning views), we set sail south toward Alicante with the wind, waves, and current all pushing us along – finally some proper sailing! It's exhilarating to harness the breeze after the calm, but we're excited to arrive in Alicante for a few days of exploring the city and its sights. In this Sailing Helios episode, we kick off with an early dawn departure from the charming historic port of Peñíscola, sailing alongside the fishing fleet toward Valencia, Spain's stunning coastal city and major commercial harbour. The ancient historic centre welcomes us—but we've timed our arrival perfectly (or chaotically!) during the vibrant October festivities for Día de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Moors & Christians (Moros y Cristianos) celebrations! Harbor-area concerts blast through the night, and the next day we're hit with massive parades, people in elaborate period costumes (think medieval knights, Moorish warriors, striped robes, and more), marching bands, and thunderous "gunshots" from replica muskets/arquebuses fired right in the square—smoke everywhere, crowds loving it, no one running because it's all tradition! We explore Valencia's top sights amid the festive energy before setting sail the following morning to our next destination, Dénia. Perfect for fans of sailing adventures, Mediterranean cruising, Spanish history, cultural festivals with gunpowder displays, parades, and unexpected surprises! In this episode, we leave the safety of the bay near Sant Carles de la Ràpita and set sail for the historic coastal town of Peñíscola — a place shaped by Templar Knights and exiled popes. As we approach, we carefully navigate the shallow waters inside the breakwater to find just enough depth, tucked safely away from the busy fishing fleet. The next morning, we head ashore to explore this beautiful old town, with its winding streets climbing toward the spectacular Castillo del Papa Luna. Built by the Templar Knights in the 13th century, the castle later became home to Pope Benedict XIII, who lived here in exile during the Western Schism. Standing among these ancient walls, it’s impossible not to feel connected to centuries of history. Moments like these — combining sailing, discovery, and unforgettable places — are what we truly cherish on our adventures aboard Helios. ⚓ Join us for another authentic sailing journey filled with history, hidden anchorages, and life aboard in the Mediterranean. In this episode of Sailing Helios, we leave the marina and continue our journey down the Spanish coast. With very little wind, much of the passage becomes a long motor-sail, reminding us that cruising isn’t always perfect sailing. We discover a series of beautiful, sheltered anchorages near the Ebro River Delta, giving us protection from swell and a rare peaceful night’s sleep. But calm conditions don’t last long… As storms roll in, we find ourselves caught in the middle of a civil defence weather warning. With thunder and lightning surrounding us, we make a tense entrance into La Ràpita Marina just in time to take shelter. For the next two days, relentless rain keeps us pinned down. When the skies finally clear, we head into town to reprovision, regroup, and prepare Helios for the next leg west along the Spanish coast. This episode shows the real side of life aboard — changing weather, tough decisions, safe anchorages, and the constant balance between adventure and caution. ⚓ In this episode: Coastal sailing in Spain Motor-sailing in light winds Ebro Delta anchorages Storm sailing & marina shelter Thunderstorms at sea Life aboard in bad weather Reprovisioning & passage prep If you enjoy honest sailing adventures, real cruising life, and Mediterranean exploration, don’t forget to subscribe and join us on the journey. In this episode, we sail into Arenys de Mar, a small marina and coastal town we knew very little about before arriving. As is often the case in sailing life, we never quite know what to expect from these smaller stops — but Arenys de Mar surprises us in the best way. What was meant to be a quick two-day visit quickly turns into four as we settle into marina life, explore the town, and enjoy the relaxed local atmosphere. We wander the streets, soak up the charm of this Catalan seaside town, and catch up with fellow sailors we’ve met through Facebook and the wider cruising community. It’s time to lift anchor and say goodbye as we leave friends behind and continue sailing south along the coast of Spain. The wind is light, but the sea is kind — making for a relaxed and enjoyable day motor sailing along the shoreline. After spending the night in Blanes, we wake to calm seas and perfect conditions for learning. With very little pressure from wind or waves, Jude takes the opportunity to work on her sailing skills and gain more confidence at the helm. Sailing Spain, anchoring problems and real cruising life aboard our sailboat Helios. In this episode, an anchor buoy mishap turns into a lesson while moving down the Spanish coast to Palamós in changing weather. In this episode, things don’t go quite to plan with our new anchor buoy, Grippy. After spending a peaceful 24 hours at anchor, the weather begins to change and we decide to move further down the coast in search of better shelter at Palamós. While setting the anchor, the buoy line is pulled through the propeller, snapping free from Grippy and causing damage to the buoy itself — but thankfully without immobilising the engine. It’s a good reminder of how quickly simple manoeuvres can turn into lessons when cruising. Once everything is under control, we head ashore to explore the beautiful seaside town of Palamós and catch up with our friends Di and Stu from The Campbell Gamble. By the end of the day, all is well aboard Helios — although Grippy doesn’t come away unscathed. Another day of real-life cruising, problem-solving, and learning as we continue sailing Spain. In this episode of Sailing Helios, we explore the town of Roses, our very first stop after sailing into Spain. Roses has a relaxed holiday feel, but arriving in autumn means the crowds have thinned and the town feels calm and welcoming. After taking care of the essentials — new SIM cards and a supermarket restock — we spend time wandering through town, soaking up the atmosphere, and visiting the local church. Unsettled weather keeps us in Roses longer than planned, and we end up spending six quiet days anchored in the bay waiting for the right conditions to move on. When the forecast finally improves, we set sail again, following the rugged Costa Brava coastline south to a beautiful bay called Sa Riera, where we drop anchor for the night. A gentle episode of autumn sailing, small routines, and enjoying Spain at a slower pace. In this episode, we finally replace our Spade anchor with a brand-new setup, visiting the excellent chandleries in Canet-en-Roussillon to get Helios ready for the next stage of our journey. Being back in Canet is surprisingly emotional. This is where we first laid eyes on Helios and where our sailing adventure began. Three years later, after more than 6,000 nautical miles sailing around the Mediterranean, it’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and the incredible friends we’ve made along the way. Along with the new anchor, we also picked up a Grippy Anchor Buoy to improve visibility when we’re at anchor — something we’ve been meaning to do for a long time. With bad weather forecast, we decided to wait one more day before heading south into Spain. When the window opens, we enjoy a beautiful sail to Roses, where we finally put our new anchor and buoy to the test. A practical upgrade, a bit of nostalgia, and another memorable sail aboard Helios. In this episode, we enjoy some well-earned downtime while staying at Cap d'Agde Marina. It’s a vast marina surrounded by excellent chandleries, shops, cafés, and restaurants — and just a short distance from the famous Cap d’Agde nudist beaches. Unsurprisingly, there are a few interesting and unusual shops around town that make this stop a memorable one. After stocking up and enjoying marina life, it’s time to set sail once more. We depart Cap d’Agde and head west along the French Mediterranean coast to Canet-en-Roussillon, returning to where our sailing journey first began two and a half years ago. As is typical for this coastline, strong offshore winds provide an exciting and fast sail before we dock back in Canet — closing the loop on an incredible chapter of our sailing adventure.
