Past Bab el-Mandeb, the wind finally arrived. After days of preparation in Djibouti — cleaning the boat, servicing the engines, and loading 900 liters of fuel in jerry cans — we set off toward one of the most notorious passages in the world: the Gulf of Aden. The moment we cleared the harbor, the conditions changed. Thirty knots of wind filled in on a beam reach and suddenly we were sailing fast, pushing northwest to stay clear of Somali waters before joining the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) used by commercial ships crossing between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. With the Bab el-Mandeb finally behind us, we’re making miles under sail — but we’re still on high alert as we pass between the coasts of Yemen and Somalia. Cargo ships share the corridor, naval patrols monitor the region, and the Indian Ocean is beginning to build as we approach the end of the lane. The strait may be behind us… but this passage isn’t over yet. 9,500 miles into our 10,500-mile journey… this was the stretch 90% of people told us not to sail. Bab el-Mandeb — pirate waters between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It starts at night. Ships with AIS turned off. Shadows on the horizon. Then our starboard engine stops cooling. No raw water. No cooling. Overheat it here… and we lose it for good. Hours in the engine room. Heat. Sweat. Exhaustion. Finally — water flows again. That night, the GPS flips to Indian Ocean. We made it through. But we’re still not cleared into Djibouti… and over 1,000 miles of high-risk water still lie ahead. A day after a pirate distress call, we sail straight into the same red zone off the coast of Yemen. We rehearse our plan. Unmarked boats begin closing in. Every shadow feels wrong. Relief comes… but the night isn’t done with us. As birds swarm the boat and darkness settles in, a distant light appears — and everything goes quiet. We set out to cross the Red Sea from north to south knowing this stretch of water carries real risk. Active pirate alerts were being reported as we approached the high-risk zone near Yemen — and right in the middle of it all, we experienced the best fishing of our entire voyage. Fish after fish hit our lines while tension quietly built on the horizon. Mid-crossing, a piracy distress signal came through directly along our heading. Excitement and uncertainty collided as we pushed south, balancing vigilance with the unbelievable abundance around us. This passage was a reminder of how unpredictable life at sea can be — equal parts adrenaline, beauty, and raw adventure. Leaving the Suez Canal behind, we sail into the Red Sea — and immediately feel the shift. The heat is relentless, nerves are high, and this stretch of water demands attention. In these first miles, we’re not pushing limits yet… just learning what the Red Sea is going to ask of us. Between adjusting to the conditions, a spontaneous onboard haircut, and a calm moment that turns chaotic when we hook a massive tuna, things escalate fast. And then comes the fishing blooper of a lifetime — somehow, in the chaos, the fish spits the hook… straight into me. By the end of the episode, we’re fully committed, deeper into the Red Sea, and mentally preparing for whatever comes next. This is only the beginning. #bumsonaboat #RedSea #SailingAdventure #SailingLife #SuezCanal #OceanAdventure #SailingVlog #BlueWaterSailing #Liveaboard #OffshoreSailing #SailingYouTube #AdventureAtSea #LifeAtSea #SailingJourney #OceanLife
Sailing through the Suez Canal is unlike any other passage on Earth. In this full-length episode, we enter the canal at Port Said and navigate one of the world’s most important and tightly controlled waterways by sailboat. From towering container ships and nonstop construction to fishermen working at sunrise, this journey reveals the human scale behind a global artery of trade. What began as a distant dream a decade ago becomes reality as the horizon closes in and history surrounds us. Guided by Suez pilots, passing inches from giants of steel, and sharing the canal with families who have fished these waters for generations, this transit marks a turning point in our voyage. This is not just a crossing—it’s a moment where oceans, economies, and lives converge. Crete was more than just a stop — it was a turning point. After sailing into the crystal-clear waters of Crete, Carston climbs the mast before showing her skills beneath the surface, cleaning the bottom of the boat in water too beautiful to rush. It’s our last truly safe swim, our last easy moment, before the voyage ahead becomes far more serious. With few stops remaining and increasing risks on the road to Dubai, we say goodbye to comfort and set our sights on the Suez Canal. Sailing towards the Suez, after 45 days of trying, the ocean finally rewards us — our first fish of the journey. This is where the adventure changes. We leave Malta with great wind, high spirits, and hopes of catching our first fish in a long time. The Mediterranean gives us one of those rare, perfect sailing days — steady breeze, open water, and total freedom. As we approach Crete, we slow the boat, throw a line off the stern, and jump into the deep blue, swimming as the boat drifts forward. At the same time, halfway across the world, Hurricane Beryl is heading straight for Grenada — where my sailboat Chak Matay has been moored. I’ve owned her for 10 years, and she’s survived more than she ever should have. This episode is about distance, freedom, and the helpless feeling of being far away when everything you love is in the path of a storm. Some places don’t just welcome you; they recharge you. Malta was that place—warm people, electric nights, and streets that seem to guide you even when you’re lost. It reminded me why we travel in the first place: to feel alive, to reconnect, to start fresh. As we sail toward Crete, that energy comes with us. Apparently I’ve been saying “Gibraltar” wrong… but then a guy from the UK told me THEY don’t pronounce the R either. So I checked Google… and Google said something entirely different. 😅 Meanwhile the sail to Malta was calm, beautiful, and completely drama-free. After crossing the Atlantic from Grenada, navigating the orca attack zone, and surviving the Strait of Gibraltar, we finally caught a break — fair winds and following seas from Gibraltar to Malta. On the surface, it was perfect: calm seas, golden sunsets, and the kind of rhythm sailors dream of. But behind that beauty lies the truth of delivery life — long hours, constant motion, and a relentless pace that never really stops. In this episode, nothing dramatic happens. No storms. No close calls. Just the quiet, steady work that keeps us moving forward. Sometimes, sailing isn’t about what happens. It’s about what doesn’t. We’ve crossed the Atlantic… but some of the most dangerous waters of our voyage now lie ahead. Leaving Cádiz, Spain, we sail into the Strait of Gibraltar — a passage feared by sailors for two reasons: orcas and traffic. In recent years, orcas have attacked countless boats along this stretch of coast — ramming hulls, snapping rudders, and even sinking yachts. To protect our boat, we hug the shoreline in shallow water… but that means dodging fishing nets, pods, and shoals that can rise without warning. And then comes the next trial: the Strait of Gibraltar itself. This narrow gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Giant tankers, cargo ships, and ferries all funnel through the same narrow channel, leaving little room for a small sailboat like ours. Our destination is Dubai — but first, we must survive this crossing. ⚓ Join us as we navigate danger, dodge orcas, and sail into one of the most legendary straits on Earth. 🔔 Subscribe to follow our journey across the seas: [Your Channel Link] 👍 Like the video if you enjoy the adventure — it really helps out! #Sailing #OrcaAttacks #StraitOfGibraltar #AdventureSailing #AtlanticCrossing #SailingLife

Crossing the Atlantic is never easy⏤but this was one of the hardest decisions we've had to make. In the middle of rough seas and rising winds, our dinghy became a dangerous liability.
