The heat exchangers on our Yanmar engines are a problem. Replacing them is an expensive proposition, but we're not sure if they can be salvaged. In this episode you'll see how challenging it is simply to take them apart, and then we have to consider if it's worth it to even try to rehab them. After all, it's a lot cheaper to buy new heat exchangers now, than destroy our engines completely when the old ones fail. Is it worth even worth trying? ?More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. More about Roam here ??https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ ? There's nothing quite as nice as all new plumbing. In this episode, we replace our toilets as well as the entire waste water system. The only thing remaining is the black water tank, and only because we can't get it out of the boat without cutting it in half. Our old hoses were smelly, and filled with hardened waste. Fortunately, the new ones are guaranteed for 10 years, and with good care, could last even longer. Unlike most boat installations, we've chosen to use stainless steel wire and the Clamptite Tool in place for standard hose clamps. They are rated for higher pressure, give even pressure all the way around the hose, and don't have that brually sharp edge designed to cut you to the bone. When you aren't confident that the existing thru-hulls are secure and the valves won't turn, it's time to look for a new option. We chose to replace every single thru-hull so that we could be confident in their installation. This also allowed us to choose exactly what we wanted. Time for an upgrade. We chose Marelon composite thru-hulls and hopefully, we'll never have to replace them again. The entire purpose behind doing our own major engine maintenance is to save money, and give old parts new life where possible. We have two Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75hp engines. With regular maintenance, these engines should comfortably last 10,000hrs and ours have 5,000. Engine maintenance is difficult on a boat. Space is tight, temperatures are often unbearable, and unless you have confidence and experience working on engines, it's not uncommon to discover a lot of deferred maintenance. When we purchased the boat, we knew it was leaking oil. We were also pretty certain that nothing deeper than semi-regular oil and impeller changes were done. Now we have three choices: 1. Repower. 2. Replace the old components with new ones. 3. Disassemble, clean, and fix the components that can be salvaged and replace those that can't. We've opted for door number three. Shawn has a lifetime wrenching on engines, developing this skill from about age six at his father and brother's sides. Also, new engines are not in the budget. So, it's makeover time. All shop equipment was purchased at Harbor Freight. Music by Uppbeat. https://uppbeat.io/ https://sailingroam.com/ ?More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. We weren't planning to be here this long. The seasons are changing quickly and with it comes cold temperatures and short days. Everything we own is in two storage containers that are little more than metal boxes. These will certainly have plenty of condensation during the cold months and that can lead to mold. They are also a poor place to keep temperature sensitive supplies like paint and resin. In this episode we're moving our belongings into climate controlled storage. If we hope to get much work done this winter, we will need some lights. In part two of this episode we do a quick and dirty light installation. It's not pretty, but it will get the job done. Since day one back in July of 2022, we have had several hatches that leaked. While in Guatemala, we re-bedded two of the three hatches in the salon and galley, but that's as far as we got. We mitigated the problem by keeping a bucket or bowl under the leaky spots, with the intention to re-bed the rest of the hatches as time permitted. Taking care of that problem was definitely a job for while we're in the boatyard doing the refit, and only a month into the process, we got busy removing the worst offenders. Unfortunately, they were corroded so completely that we couldn't separate the screws and hinges from the frames without breaking them, so we had to order new ones. We have a European boat. It was built in France and many of the component parts are also made in France. This includes the deck hatches. This is where we made our first mistake. We procrastinated a few weeks, and July turned into August. If you've ever tried to acquire ANYTHING from Europe in August, you will have discovered that everyone goes on holiday for the entire month of August. At least they do in France. Four months later, we finally got our new hatches. That's four months having two huge holes in the boat covered with tape, and leaking profusely into large plastic totes. After a few mistakes, we finally got them installed and are one step close to having a dry boat. One of the biggest and costliest project in many yacht refits is new batteries. These days, most battery changes are by people moving from standard AGMs to Lithium, or making the change to a higher native voltage from 12v to 24v or 48v. We are making the change to a native 48v system and increasing the storage capacity to 55kwh in an effort to increase our cruising independence. Commercial marine batteries tend to come in standard sizes and are limited to 100ah or 200ah. Going the traditional route would require us to expand the space that holds by batteries by double or triple the physical space. Instead, we've opted to assemble the batteries ourselves, allowing us to choose the total voltage and capacity with a lot more flexibility. We imported CALB cells directly from China, and are doing the work to DIY our battery bank. In the end, we will get significantly more storage into a smaller space, for about 1/3 of the price. This is part one of the process. When we finish showing the entire process, we'll provide a dedicated page on our website with all the nitty, gritty details including the entire planning and importation process as well as the installation. We removed every piece of hardware from the mast and boom and discovered a lot of peeled and bubbling paint. That can only mean one thing...corrosion. We wanted a better look at the aluminum, so we decided to completely strip and repaint both mast and boom. Weeks of sanding did a pretty good job removing most of the paint, but the edges and corners needed a bit more attention. We thought about having the yard media blast, but the cost was out of our budget. With a bit of research we discovered that you can sand blast through a pressure washer and it's a safe process. Dry media blasting is a dangerous proposition requiring an enclosed space and a lot of protective gear to protect your skin and lungs. We purchased a cheap kit from Amazon, rented a heavy duty pressure washer from the local Home Depot, and 1000lbs of sand. After a bit of trial and error, we completely cleaned the mast of every scrap of paint. Unfortunately, by the time we finished the hand sanding of the boom, the season turned and we ran out of appropriate weather to sand blast, so we'll have to wait for spring with some warmer temperatures and longer days to finish this project. Unfortunately that also means we won't be able to paint until spring. One more project left partly done. Months after hauling our 54' catamaran out of the water to begin the refit, we finally did something that will stay on the boat. Many projects are in process, but that's been the name of the game for a long time. We were both itching to move this refit in the opposite direction. It's a small thing, but it feels great to refresh the all the exterior caulk. Unfortunately, like most boat projects, this one has led to more projects. The mast, boom, and davits we removed shortly after we hauled ROAM out of the water. They have been sitting on foam blocks since then waiting to reach the top of the priority list. Our rigging makeover is a multi step process that starts now. The first step is to remove every piece of hardware so that we can determine what news to be replaced and what can simply be cleaned and serviced and put back in use. Our rigging inspector suspected that Tef-Gel was not used when the stainless steel screws were put into the aluminum mast, and sure enough, many of the screws wouldn't budge. With the help of a manual impact driver and hours of pounding, we managed to remove every piece of hardware from the rigging. While Shawn was busy persuading the hardware to come off, Geri was inside discovering salt crystals and stagnant water under the cabin sole. A huge clean out was definitely in order before we could figure out where it all came from. We are finally moving forward on our refit. This is the first time we're doing work that actually moves the project forward, rather than tearing stuff apart. The engine rooms are going to get a face lift, but before we can proceed they need to be cleaned, sanded, and have their holes and other issues repaired. It's hot and dirty work, but we can't move forward until it's done. Every year thousands of people converge in Annapolis Maryland for the US Sailboat Show. Most are coming to get a look at the latest boats with an eye towards their next floating home. We already have a boat and are deep into a full refit, so a new boat was not on our agenda. We have decisions to make and things to buy, so the vendors are where we focused our time. In this video, we will show you our favorite vendors, and get in deep with interviews regarding some of the best products out there. No one enjoys the truly dirty jobs. In this episode we remove our waste hoses. This was a job we'd considering hiring out to the yard crew, but decided our budget would thank us if we just did it ourselves. Also, we didn't want the yard crew to hate us this early into this refit. We expect to want their help as the months progress. We also discover just how filthy our hot water tanks are. Positively gross. A huge part of our refit involves giving the mast some much needed attention. In addition to maintaining and replacing the hardware, we have to tackle the "C" word...CORROSION! We could do the work with the mast in place, but in order to really do the job right, we're bringing the mast down. The process is made more complicated by some stubborn hardware, but the experts at Zimmerman Marine are getting it done. Check out our friend's blog (SV Ruffian of Amble) to see how wrong this process can go: https://ruffian.uk/2023/09/annus-horribilis/ Music by Epidemic Sound and Artlist. https://www.epidemicsound.com https://www.artlist.io https://sailingroam.com/ ?More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. We are really into the demolition now. In this episode we work on removing every wire and hose in the boat...ceilings, bilges, engine rooms, everywhere! We also discover part of the build process that makes removing the wire nearly impossible.
