In this episode, Herby seals up the huge characteristic windows found on all boats of this size from this era. The large windows are a massive liability in the ocean because the large fragile windows can easily break when smashed by giant waves. Once the windows are broken, subsequent waves will flood the boat’s interior and sink you! Herby seals up the large holes with fiberglass and polyester resin from @TotalBoat by creating a strong and thick plug on inside. When he works on the deckhouse, he will then do the same on the outside. He also explains why these windows needed to be sealed up now because the inside will be built with epoxy and the outside with polyester. There are numerous issues with this rig which Herby will be correcting in the future to make this a true ocean cruiser and that all starts with getting rid of the mast! Herby uses the mast on Wisdom to drop the mast and get it out of the way so that work can progress and the boat can become readied for the new and improved rig. He then explains various methods to lower a mast, and tells you which are better than other methods and how you can choose which method is best for you based on your finances and situation. Bulwarks! They give slightly more freeboard to help keep ocean waves off the deck, and more practically, they give you something to walk on when heeled over really far while bluewater cruising. Herby builds the supports for the bulwarks with Totalboat Silica Thickener and Polyester Resin and then covers over the joint with 1708 fiberglass. This is the initial tabbing which will be further reinforced during later stages of the build. Right now, the bulwarks are just going to support the tent that I’m building to cover the boat and let me work regardless of the weather. With no motor and dead rigging, the only option to move the boat is to tow it all the way into Baltimore where the project will be concluded. Come along on a wild ride as Windpuff gets towed by Herby’s dad’s boat. Along the way, Herby works on the bulwarks and deals with a free spinning propeller shaft, as well as copious amounts of water that splashes onto the deck but can’t currently drain away. Lastly, Herby gets a preview of how the transom extension performs as Windpuff is towed along at hull speed, pushing the design to its theoretical limit and showcasing how the water moves over it at speed. The plan is to replace the gas engine with an electric engine that weighs around 120 pounds and produces 30hp! This sounds great, but first we have to get the old motor out of there and that is a tricky process. Herby takes you through the whole process of pulling the motor, showing you what works and what didn't work so that when you pull your own engine, you can skip all the parts that didn't work and just do what worked!
